During the past holiday season we enjoyed here at Kendal at Hanover a concert by the University Chorus of the Upper Valley (UCUV). This male ensemble of roughly 40 voices has achieved an enviable reputation as one of the finest singing groups in the area. It was founded in the late 1970s as a response to the lack of male singers who knew Dartmouth songs and would be available during the commencement period. Our classmate George Barr was very much involved in its creation and is generally regarded as the founding father of the UCUV. Others, such as our classmate Bob Pease and Orton Hicks Jr. '49 were very much involved in the groups creation. Fred Berthold and Bud Elder have been members for a long time. I joined shortly after moving to Kendal but have since left the group as the quality of my voice has deteriorated. Originally confined to Dartmouth men, the membership has shifted to include graduates of other colleges and universities (even Harvard and Yale!). The chorus gives concerts during the spring and also during the winter holiday season at a variety of locations in the area. We are fortunate to have the group as a part of our rich musical environment here in the Upper Valley.
