NOVEMBER 1964 SCOTT C. OLIN, SIMON J. MORAND III

An absolutely magnificent combination of sparkling sunshine, fresh westerly breezes, and a house that's three-quarters painted together with the expected thrills of the National League's final pennant race day and the like make this a most frustrating day on which to transcribe the '5O frolics for November. Add in a few minor things such as precinct work, church committees, business trips, and enrollment meetings and it becomes a situation virtually demanding an accelerated pace just to cover the basics. So pay attention, we may ask questions later, and take a fast look at ...

INFANT INFO - The squeeze of three months' accumulations in data made last month's ALUMAG a crowded vehicle for reports and words relative to one brave's offspring and commercial ventures. Better bush beating might have given us further items, but here's the one listing which should be related now.

Pieter and Mary von Herrmann have a year-old pattering about their Schenectady abode whence Pete parades forth to GE's Knolls Atomic Power Lab as manager-advanced design. The new offspring is a second daughter, Mary Layton, born August 13, 1963. Next elder is Timothy (1960) and then Joan Gabriele, a five-days-before-Christmas present in 1958. Pieter has been with General Electric just about that long previously having put in a couple of years with General Motors Research Labs in nuclear physics. He got an M.A. from Dartmouth in 1953 and his doctorate in '56 from Yale, both in physics. In 1956 he got a fellowship from the Atomic Development Fund and he got married. That was a pretty good year!

Anyone else want to tell the world about your kiddies?

Tor Arneberg appears to be talcing the slopes of those business mountains with the same ease and speed he negotiated those New Hampshire hills. Last year after an association with Kordite Co. of Macedon, N. Y., he joined up with the Xerox Corp. as a district sales manager, moved to manager of Xerox' mid- New York branch, and now has been named manager of marketing development. Tor and Jen and their three daughters have moved from Darien, Conn., to a new home in Pittsford, N. Y.

DEPARTMENT OF INDIAN AFFAIRS - Several years ago one of our cohorts made the cogent suggestion that we send all the Indians and the old people back to where they came from, perhaps starting with the old Indians. Despite this intelligent approach to solving all of the problems of our nation, many 50's continue to strive diligently and determinedly for the Dartmouth brand of redskins in many realms. The main areas of concern include alumni associations and clubs and Dartmouth enrollment work. In the first category, Jim Vail (American Hospital Supply, Charlotte, N. C.) is a member of the executive committee of the General Association, Bob McIlwain is president of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers, and Phil See is manager for the Tuck School Association of Boston.

Presidents of local Dartmouth clubs include Dr. Stuart Kay (New Canaan, Conn.), John Wolf (Baltimore), Ken Clark (Memphis) and John Lotter (Milwaukee). The post of club secretary is held by Dr. Don Russell (Dartmouth Club of Central Connecticut in New Britain), Miles Mills (Iowa), Bob Burrill (Cape Cod), Harold Fitkin (Toledo) and Bob McConaughy (Utah). The last Bob mentioned, by the way, runs a great place for anyone who wants a vacation in fabulous surroundings, the R-lazy-S ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Would-be wranglers might keep it in mind.

The national enrollment committee comprises about 100 districts, and our classmates are prominent in their work as chairmen in many. The current address list of officers includes these men: Gary Earle (District #20, Bristol, Mass.), Bob Burrill (#21, Cape Cod), Paul Rouillard (#46, Northeastern New York), Ken Clark (#113. West Tennessee), Lew Boyd (#115, East Tennessee), George Partlow (#119, Kentucky), George Carpenter (#155, Iowa), and BobCone (#167, Western Texas). Quite an impressive list, eh?

GOVERNMENT GUYS - Normally this category deals with fellows in military and foreign service, and last month we brought you up to date on several. This report will be most inadequate as the clipping services haven't begun to feed us the names of all of you who have one assignment or another in the current political campaigns. Besides Dan Featherston's intense interest in Massachusetts which was cited last spring, we learned that Dave Reier is a Republican candidate for the Board of Education in Middletown, Conn. "Rab" is a partner in Bull Metal Products Co., Inc. there and a member of the Lions, the police station building committee, and the town Republican committee. ... In neighboring New York, Alton Wentworth has toiled as chairman of the Northern Westchester Goldwater for President Committee. Al is a manufacturers' agent in the non-ferrous metal industry. He and Cynthia (sister of 1950's Howie Watts) have three children, Alton G. Jr., Richard M., and Cynthia Jan, and one dachshund, Dina. ... About the first of the year we'll get a batch of newspaper stories on many others who knocked on doors, wrote speeches, and otherwise campaigned or got elected. See ya then!

MEDIA MATTERS - Last spring we got a change of address telling that Pete Reilly is directory sales manager for the Courier- Citizen Co. in Lowell, Mass. ... In the Nutmeg State, the Hartford Courant's financial editor, Web Gault, moderated their third annual free investment forum. If you want to learn how to become a coupon clipper, plan to attend the next session in April. ... Down in Dixie, the forementioned HowieWatts has gone to work for an Atlanta ad agency. Tucker Wayne & Co., 1175 Peachtree St., N.E. He and the former Cynthia Rosar have two youngsters, Shelley who is 15 and Howard Jr., 13. They hope to attend the 15th next June. Howie's previous agency jobs included stints with Lennen & Newell, Brown & Crane, and Cunningham & Walsh. ... It may be reaching a bit to list Stan Schneider under media, but he does own the Colony Theater in Charlotte and it's not impossible to advertise via movie film. Stan and Blossom have three children, Jeff (1953), Lori (an income tax deduction by one day in 1959), and Susan (1961). Stan, by the way, earned his master's at Penn a dozen years ago. ... In the video view, Don Hyatt is constantly making news. Back in June he produced NBC's documentary, "Red, White and Blue" for flag day and noted that too many Americans look forward to our national holidays as a time for jazz festivals, auto races, and traffic mayhem, rodeos, and carnivals. He urged that we purchase and display Old Glory. You still have time for November 11 if you missed Election Day, and you'll find it makes your home look a lot better to you when the stars and stripes are waving there! ... Finally, Alex Hoffman has been appointed to the post of merchandising manager in the household products division of Lever Brothers. Alex had been product manager for Wisk, now will be responsible for marketing the company's high suds detergents (Rinso Blue, Surf, Breeze, Silver Dust, Handy Andy, and Wisk). Washer owners and space salesmen take note.

Lloyd Woodbury has been elected a vice president of The Putnam Management Company of Boston, manager of the Putnam group of mutual funds. Lloyd, who lives in nearby Sudbury, has been an investment analyst from the Putnam organization since 1961. He is in charge of all fixed income investments of the five mutual funds under Putnam management, which total over $1 billion in total assets.

FINANCIAL FOLK - A little research could produce additional items of interest about the guys who charge (or pay, depending on your affluence) interest. Big news at the moment, however, concerns the election of Herb Ray as a vice president of the First National Bank of Chicago. Herb's back in the commercial department after a couple of years in personnel. Congrats, Herb!
