The ice gnomes certainly marched out of their norways this year in our part of the country. We didn't suffer much snow (he said crossing his fingers lest the weeks after Ground Hog Day make him seem foolish before the column appears in print) but local homeowners have been contributing heavily to the benevolent fuel oil dealers and gas utilities. We apartment dwellers sympathize ... especially when the landlord starts talking about "rising costs of operation" and other foreboding subjects.

While you're resting up from the last bout of shoveling snow and contemplating turning a hoe in the garden, you might survey recent events at...

THE HITCHING POST

On November 22 Nick Costes and Polytime Andros were married in Chicago. The bride attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the School of Fine Arts of the National University of Engineering Science in Athens, Greece. She graduated from Northwestern and is an art teacher in the Wilmette public schools. Nick attended the civil engineering school at the National University, graduated from American Athens College, and obtained a degree from North Carolina State as well as Dartmouth. He's now on the scientific staff of the Army's snow, ice, and permafrost research establishment in Wilmette.

WALKING THE LAST MILE

Confusion on an address change prompted us to write Stan Schneider whose job as manager and production chief for Ace Service and Supply Co. in High Point, N. C., was reported last month. Not only did Stan inform us that his company manufactures laundry, dry cleaning, and special textile supplies, but he also revealed that he is engaged to be married next June to Miss Blossom Brenner.

RATTLE PRATTLE

Two youngsters, prospective members of the Class of 1980, arrived in time to provide tax deductions in December. The Bill McCallum family has a second son, William Herbert, born in Princeton, N. J., on the 21st. Bill is back from a stint in lowa where he was engineering for Walsh Construction Co. on a cement plant job.

The other year-end "spin off" was accomplished by Hal and Donna Fitkin on December 28. Randall Knox will answer to "Randy" and probably has already been coached in the advantages of a split-T formation.

A couple of other lads previously unreported here include Arthur Olmsted Poltrack, born last May 15 to Tony and ArlenePoltrack. The head of the house commutes from Stamford to his auditor work with the YMCA of Greater New York.

Bill R. and Bobbie Collins checked in from South Dartmouth, Mass., where Bill is in medical practice and son Bruce Norman will celebrate his first birthday on May 23.

Just so you won't think there are no femmes being added to the rosters, let us remind you that Wally Willett and Joan had a daughter last Aug. 31, Pamela Anne. Wally is Assistant District Sales Manager for the Linde Division of Union Carbide in Pittsburgh.

Congratulations, best wishes, and welcome, kiddies!

GRAPEVINE REPORTS

After an interim period running a company of his own and designing fibre glass boats, Dave Kinney has taken employment with Firemen's Mutual Insurance Co. in New York as an engineer-salesman. Dave says the firm handles industrial insurance. Besides a son, David, born in May of 1957, Dave has a new address in Darien, Conn., and reports he's been on a race or two to Bermuda, sailboat style, of course.

Cal Minor was tolerant in noting that our Caribbean geography is darned fuzzy. We transferred him to Trinidad instead of Haiti, where Texaco has him located. There is a Port-of-Spain in Trinidad but the Minors are in Port-au-Prince. It's nice to be able to tell you that the move is not the only news; Cal has been made a Vice President of Texaco (Caribbean) Inc. and manager of the Port-au-Prince operation. That's in Haiti. Congratulations, Cal.

In the financial fold we find that Herb Ray has been made an assistant cashier at the First National Bank in Chicago.... Ray DeVoe is working for Spencer Trask & Co. in the Lower Manhattan area.... Uptown JackVanZoeren is the eastern credit mogul for National Distillers. Jack's family consists of a wife, Marilyn, and two daughters, Susan born March 29, 1956, and Margaret, a May Day gal a year later Ben Ferguson is a credit analyst at National Shawmut Bank in Boston.

Marketers in our ranks include Ed Myers who represents the marine products division of McCulloch Corp. in northern Illinois and Wes Carr who has taken to representing himself in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama as agent for lines of giftware, housewares, and hardware. Don't "ware" yourself out covering five states, Wes!

Bob Kirby is assistant to the marketing V. P. at the Underwood Corp. in New York. ... Also toiling in Gotham is Jack Greeley with Continental Can Co.... Dick Bill covers western Pennsylvania for the Simonds Saw and Steel Co.... Bob Ayres is sales manager for the L. J. Barrett Company, manufacturers of centrifugal pumps and equipment.

We've lost a member, Bob Lindell. Last address we had was in Brussels and any one who knows his whereabouts can do us a favor by sending a postal with the new location. Couldn't read the official explanation on the mail that was returned, but the gist of it was, "He's not here any more."

Phil Chapalis received his M.D., in Greek no less, at the National University in Athens and is now interning at Norwalk, Conn., Hospital. ... In the same environs, Dr. Stuart Kay now resides in New Canaan.... Bob D. Wilson is the associate staff radiologist at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Beantown.

EH Loeb is a partner in Fischer Loeb Co., certified public accountants from Hempstead, N. Y.... Also concerned with debits and credits is John J. Kelly, accounting supervisor in the finance department of Ethyl Corporation's Pittsburgh, Calif., plant.

Tom Doxsee not only manages and treasures the Goodelle and Bates general insurance agency in Minoa, N. Y., but also is treasurer of his church and the local Boy Scouts, held down the presidency of the Lions, and wheels and deals in the Onondaga County Republican Committee. Just to keep busy he's a vice prexy and director of the New York State Mutual Agents Association. What... no hobbies?

The insurance biz breeds extra curricular activity. Don Ayres is a general agent for State Mutual Life Assurance Co. of America up Worcester way, plays Shylock for the local Dartmouths, and gets into activities for the "Y" and the Kiwanis.... Bill Sullivan has his own agency in Worcester and you'll recall we recounted quite a string of positions and interests for him a few issues back.

Tom Green works in the University of California Radiation Lab at Berkeley. Readers of George Duffy's "50-50" Newsletter know that means Tom conducts "Research on nuclear moments and hyperfine structures by means of atomic beams." (Duke - are ya sure the AEC says it's okay to print this???)

Congratulations to John Wulp on the opening of his play, "The Saintliness of Margery Kempe," in New York on February 2. We've only seen one review to date, that of Brooks Atkinson in the New York Times, and he called it an "amusing caricature" though he doubted that there was quite enough to the fourteenth century lady, subject of the comedy to warrant three acts of theater, Hope we can reprint more of the comments in the "50-50." Think you'll agree the dean of the New York critics has indicated his approval, albeit in restrained tones, for John's work and ability.

SERVICE SCENERY

The infrequent usage of this department is understandable when you consider how few of us are left in uniform. It's almost surprising to find several names here this month. Among the new addresses we've received recently is an APO for Capt. Frank Lion at the Pacific Stars and Stripes. How far out of San Francisco? Why Frank is in a spot dear to the hearts of many of you, Korea! ... Capt. Jack Coffman will welcome any Marine Corps volunteers at the Boston Navy Building, and reports Charlie Little is once more stationed at Quantico.... Cmdr. Bob O'Neil is back flying with VF-31. Write care of FPO, New York.... "Doc" Irons has started a four-year residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital doing work in urology.

Gotta scoot. Till next time, Happy Easter!

P.S. New Yorkers, don't miss the 1950 dinner, March 19 at 37 East 39th Street. See you there!
