The contest is on! Given the incredible response to the translation contest a few months back, we are having an even bigger event! This contest will entail a bit of research combined with a bit of projection. And, here it is: on Saturday evening, June 20, at the reunion class dinner, a Grand Prize will be awarded to the member of the class of 1982 who has submitted the closest number (under or over) to the actual number of '82 names that have been written up in the '82 column of the Alumni Magazine since our first issue October 1982 and on through the June 1987 issue. Names used twice or more are only to be counted once. So, grab your old Alumni Magazines, dig into the archives, count the actual names already in print, and figure out either by guess or by scientific means (?) how many names will be included in the final column. Send your entry to me at the above address. Entries must be postmarked by June 12 in order to be eligible for the Grand Prize. This timing allows for actual in-hand counting of names in the May column, but leaves to chance the June column, which will be released postreunion. (Final numbers will be set and known when the June column is submitted for publication in April, but this information will remain confidential until the class dinner.) So, start counting now, add to that the May column figures, guess the June column number, and submit your grand total by June 12 . . . and be eligible for the Grand Prize!
Speaking of the Fifth Reunion to which we are all beckoned back to Hanover on June 19, 20, and 21 by our Baker Hall beacon, plans for the reunion continue to move at a fast and furious pace of organization. The weekend will be full of a variety of activities ranging from the Saturday night extravaganza class dinner to a Moosilauke hike, to informal get-togethers at the class tent, to sporting activities (even a wind-surfing clinic at the River!), to DOC get-away cabins, to panel discussions, one of which will be moderated by our own Philippa Gurthrie. The topic of that panel discussion will be "Five Years Out Where I've Been and Where Am I Going?" The panel members will be some of our own classmates who have chosen the road less travelled. The weekend spans a whole spectrum of fun at our fingertips! Come on down! Moreover, there is an alternative reunion in the works, being planned by Betsy Henry and NancyKricorian.
We are well on our way to breaking all records for total number of alumni and total number of people (alumni and spouses, friends, and significant others) attending a fifth reunion at Dartmouth. But, listen, really, don't feel that you have to get married to increase the number. I figure that that must be the reason for the incredible rush on nuptial announcements of late. I recently received news that Barry Eisenberg married Malka Leah Glick last November (Barry received his M.D. from Albert Einstein School of Medicine last June) and they now live in Montreal, The marriage of Paul Brock to Donna Chase (UNH '85) was also a November event and this couple will have only a short drive to the reunion. Paul and Donna have settled down in Dover, N.H. (Paul is purchasing manager for Smith Office, Inc., of Portsmouth.) And, one year ago this month, Don Tirrell married and settled down in Atlanta with his wife, Sue. Don works for a construction company.
Now, to add further fuel to the fire of our number of '82 names contest . . .
David Winchester sent news that he graduated from Northwestern Med in June of 1986 and he is now in the general surgery residency program at Northwestern — a five-year endeavor!
Beth Nachison wrote that she is in Paris until June or July of this year doing research for her disseration in 17th century French history. She is enrolled at the University of lowa, where she received her M.A. in medieval British history in 1983. The majority of her research is being conducted at the Biblioteque National and the Musee Conde in Chantilly, and she will spend part of the spring in Dijon.
Kathy Sykes spends her time designing radar systems for Raytheon Company, is living in Arlington, Mass., and, in all (!) of her spare time, Kathy scuba dives and travels as much as possible. Of late, she has visited fellow '82s Eric Einhorn and Stuart Woodring.
Also in the greater Boston area is Mukul (Mike) Kamat, who is presently a fellow at Harvard Medical School. (He reports that he recently convened with Lloyd Martin, a budding lawyer in Nashua, N.H., and with Dave Andryc, second year Harvard Business School.
Jay Mead has settled back to teaching at Holderness after an exciting itinerant year abroad. Jay travelled to all parts of the globe, Europe, Israel, Egypt, East Africa, India, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, Nepal, Hong Kong, Korea . . . and he has brought home the tales of his travels to pass along.
With that, I encourage you to polish your travelling shoes and get ready for a trip to celebrate the past five years and meet with old friends. It's not too late to send in your reservations now. Send $99 per person to: Jenny Chandler Hauge, 24 Pilgrim Court, Convent Station, NJ 07961. And, be sure to count those names and send in your guesstimates. The Grand Prize could be yours!
See you next month. Em.
