I am still looking for someone to write one or more verses for our reunion song. Not having received any to date I had to go outside the Dartmouth fold. Our son-in-law, Bill Mac Michael, Columbia '43 gave me this one:
"Put on that Dartmouth bonnet With the Big Chief on it, As Ought One goes on parade.
Our ranks are thinning But our enthusiasm is brimming This 65th reunion day."
A letter from Janet Andrews Porter, Alcoa, Tenn., gives the death of her mother Edith Andrews as November 27, 1965. She was the widow of John G. Andrews who died March 30, 1956. Her death was a blessing since she had been living in a blank world for so long. The Class extends heartfelt sympathy to Janet and to any other relatives. Thank you, Janet for sending me this notice.
The Lowell, Mass., Sun of November 17, 1965 carried the story of the testimonial dinner for Charles L. Hildreth who retired after being Town Clerk of Westford for fifty years. It was a grand occasion with 200 people attending. Tributes were given Charlie from all the departments and boards of Westford.
The toastmaster, an old friend who had practiced law with Charlie for many years, spoke of his graduation from Westford Academy in 1897, Dartmouth in 1901 then Harvard Law School in 1904. He was associated with a law firm in Lowell for several years but for 60 years has served the town of Westford, mostly in the capacity of Town Clerk. Resolutions were delivered to him from the House of Representatives, the Board of Selectmen, the Lowell Harvard Club, and from the Massachusetts State Senate. He was also presented with a Paul Revere bowl, a gift from Governor John A. Volpe.
At the close of the ceremony Charlie was presented with a gift of "coin of the realm" in appreciation by the townspeople and local industries for his years of service.
Charlie wrote that his wife Alice is placing her name in nomination to run for Town Clerk. The election takes place in March. Good luck, Alice, I am sorry I cannot vote for you but at least I can root for you.
A good letter from Harry Gilmore recently came;
"Dear Cuddy, You have been urging me for some time to come up with some item for the class notes in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. So, if you think it wise to send along the following, here goes: My son Harry Jr. '34 has reserved three connecting rooms for the 1966 Commencement period. He plans to pick up here in New Canaan, Conn., Ned Redman '06 and me, transport us to Hanover for our respective reunions, room with us, to supervise our conduct while there, and to deliver us safely back in our homes in New Canaan.
"You can perhaps understand his concern about my rooming next to aforementioned Redman during what might prove an uproarious period, particularly so as I have an idea that he has obtained information concerning the weekly walks with this Redman through the trails of the New Canaan Nature Center forest, followed by refreshments in my rooms here in the Roger Sherman Inn and argumentative discussion for an hour and a half or so.
"So, I hope, my classmates, that if I appear to be under wraps you will understand it is because of the trying association with which I shall have to contend.
"Anyhow I shall do the best I can to be the same Gillie which they knew back in the B.C. days of 1901.
"Best wishes to you in Florida or wherever you may be."
