News in late August, as this column is written, is at its scarcest. The traditional Dartmouth ritual of vacations, loafing, slavery to the great out-of-doors, etc., combine to make a reporter's job tough.
Since most folks are incommunicado till after Labor Day, this perhaps is a time for fence-straddling between the past (a bang-up season of '55-'56 for our group) and the months to come (with more big doings on the drawing boards).
As yet unreported is the eminently successful family picnic held last May at Bill Blanchard's charming and handsome acres in New Vernon, N. J. More than 200 turned out, including vast numbers of wives and kiddies, and measured in astronomical terms were the hot dogs, hamburgers, cokes and beers consumed and the pony rides given the small fry.
Looking ahead, we expect to welcome Paul Zeller and the Glee Club back to these environs next March. Details, including location for the affair, will come later. Earlier, either the night before or directly following the Princeton game in November, another musical event is under discussion. The affair would become a rallying point for all local wearers of the Green and would feature one of Dartmouth's swinging instrumental organizations. This would alter our usual fall plans to the extent that wives and dates would be included, a goal long sought by many members.
All this and more will be directed by our able executive line-up, all of whom have returned to office. These include Bill Carter '39, president; Jim Elleman '43, vice president; Al Bildner '47, secretary; and Don Palmer '51, treasurer.
