A nice postcard from Paul Woodman, from whom Herm Whitmore enjoys getting nice letters, and written from Niort, France:
Wish there was a way to see more of the boys." (Lock up the garage, Paul, and bring the family to reunion next June for a bust.) "Geographically, I live 250 miles from Paris and 125 from Bordeaux on the main highway from one to the other, only you take the right fork at Portiers. I've been waiting since May '33 for some 'iBers to find the way; I'm still hoping." .. . The Squire of Indianola, la., George Carpenter, wrote last summer, "Have been trying my hand at local politics and managed to swing the district for Ike, but in doing so, created so many enemies that I was knocked off as a Delegate for the National Convention. Helen told me that the farmer who beat me came from a family of morons. Will have to learn a new kind of diplomacy. Nancy resigned from Successful Farming to spend 5 months in Europe but was boosted to Associate Editor on her return."
From Harry Truman's photographer last summer (Phil Sanderson).. . "During the Convention in June at Wentworth-By-The- Sea (that's another Jim Smith and Bill Bemis hotel, you know, Phil) three 'iBers were among those present on the busiest Sat. o£ the month: Hort Chandler of the New England Electric Co. on their annual outing, CharlieMcCarthy attending the New England Bakers Convention, while I was on the job in capacity with the Fourth Estate. Also at a previous convention of the Mass. Lions Club, ClintCarvell was on the program." .. . Phil was aboard the submarine Tang when she was making her first dive in Maine. Phil's daughter, Phyllis, graduated with a BA degree from U. of N. H. last June, and wasting no time, on Aug. 10, married John L. Scott, who had been in her class but previously had left and gone into the Air Force thanks, Jake.
It was pleasing to receive the announcement as of last July 7 that Al Gottschaldt is Pres. of Gott- schaldt-Mickelberry, Inc., 1313 Congress Bldg., Miami, and a great tribute to Al is the fact that practically all the accounts stuck with him in their reorganization. Said Al, "...Think you made a grand choice in Steve Mahoney as reunion Chairman. I had a note from him saying you folks had made me Florida Chairman. I suppose that means I must get Otto Kubin and Johnnie Thayer out and that won't be easy. Any others?"
Coming back at 3 under par at the annual Buffalo Tournament, Timber Top Dan Shea had the pleasure of a nice visit with Clara and Eddie Felt. When the heat of the summer came on, Shamus, who has loyally been serving on the Blue Ribbon Panel of the Grand Jury (the Judge wanted him to be foreman), transferred his interests to West- hampton Beach, where only Dusty Rhodes could report on his activities. Said Russell, "I had a couple of blondes with me. I mentioned the name of Jones and everybody along Westhampton Beach knew the guy. Then in no time flat, I began to learn it was Shea's old hangout and that Bill Rosenfeld caught many a tarpon off the beaches there."
Dick Holton, Bill Christgau and the writer, attended the funeral of Freddie Samuels, at which the class had sent flowers. The writer stepped into that tremendous Madison Square Garden in the Continental Illinois Nat. Bank and Trust Co. in Chicago, just hungry to see Dick Aishton, last Aug. 6, and so was escorted with pomp up to the throne, and an altar that looks like St. Peter's in Rome, but Dick had departed on a vacation. . . . Huntley Bennett, good-looking son of Betty and Homer Bennett, got the opportunity of a lifetime that he'd been looking for as a space man for Time and Life out in California, where he has gone to stake out a claim. The Swede has been mighty active in Kiwanis work, and Delegate to the Convention, and leader for Taft, in his neighborhood.

Carolyn and George Dockstader have announced the engagement and near marriage of daughter Nancy Allen.
Lymie Burgess, of Granby, Conn., writes and says he's resting quite well from the accident and recovery will be complete in another 15 months, and continues, "Am entering law school this fall, Springfield, Mass., so have lots of work cut out for next 5 years. However, hanging out a shingle at 65 leaves 30 years to practice." ... Josephine and Jack O Donnell have 3 outstanding boys, D '43, and D '45, and son Charlie is now a freshman.. .. Ax Proctor, whom we have always hoped to see at Hanover, from which he is only a mashie shot away at Franklin, N. H., was sorry to miss Millie and Stan Bates (we were all sorry) at the Yankee Pedlar dinner. . . . "Pat and I took off Aug. 18 for a visit with Clara and Ed Felt at their summer hideout in Ontario and then a gang of us went for a week of trout fishing at my club in the Laurentians, plus a few more days for Pat and me in the wilderness, and the old sleeping bags (not what you mean)" .. . (George Stoddard, 8/8). Hanover visitors a few months back, whom we all enjoyed seeing, were Florence and JohnnyThayer on the way to or from seeing the SewallStrouts in Maine. Also at Hanover were Marion and Charlie Weston from Hopewell, Va.
Elizabeth and Hort Chandler's Posy is a freshman at Pembroke (Brown U). Son Harvey is still in U.S. Army at Camp Devens.... On a recent postcard from Mandy Crothers, he says .. my wife says ...," yet in Pete Colwell's address book of the class just a few months back, he was a bachelor. Give, Mandyl ...
In the Oct. ALUMNI MAG, 37 different names were mentioned and 24 were not from New York (are you there, Fat Sheldon?). Says Fat, "U'e had the pleasure of having Bill and KayMudgett and their two beautiful daughters stay overnight with us, en route from Paris to Palo Alto. Their stay was all too short but Kay had to get back to help the Nixon cause. ... You may not know, but Kay is a factor in the political setup in Palo Alto." Lenah and Fat wanted so much to see the Mudgetts when they were in England seeing Roger get his degree at Oxford, but missed them. The Sheldons sailed on July 9 on the Queen Mary and returned on Aug. 16. "We saw England at the grassroots level. They are rugged and I daresay if Americans were to be forced to live so rigorously, they would need a dictator to keep everyone in line."
George Hull says "Have been in Savannah at my wife's home several times this year. Still in the real estate business in Georgetown. Dick, my boy, is at Harvard Law School and says there are about 200 Dartmouth men in different Harvard Schools."
HOLYOKE, MASS.-YANKEE PEDLAR LUNCHEON (day before Holy Cross opener) very delightful, grand cocktails; gracious hosts Larry and Louise Wallis, (both on faculty at Mt. Holyoke) Eddie O'Connor, (leading smart men's clothing shop, Hickey-Freeman, etc.), Helen and Robbie Robinson (beautiful swimming pool and charming home facing Mt. Tom in lovely Westfield) and Helen and Ted Hazen (Helen knows her antiques; son Ted Jr. '52 chose starting as a Marine private Bob, freshman at Hamilton). It was their cocktail party for all the rest of us, and what a luncheon! Thanks, Larry, Eddie, Robbie and Goosey.
Very tastefully decorated room (Dartmouth plates on the platerail, Doris Lee drapes). 'Twas a perfect setting for '18's Reunion Chrmn. as gaiety mounted and Steve Mahoney gave his adaptation of a Scotch bagpiper in kilts doing a Highland Fling. It was a flash sketch and a good one. His jacket tied around his middle, and his spindle-backed Windsor chair as a bagpipe, "it's all a reaction from visiting ancestors' graves this morning with Dot," someone injected. Also there was Parson Bill Christgau, who ate all ChaunceyHood's asprin tablets after the game. Ned Ross also enjoyed the hospitality of Dot & Steve Mahoney and drove up with Chris. Oma runs 4 book rooms at school and couldn't make the trip. Others enjoying this record turn- out luncheon of 16, Gene ('36) Tamburri's father is Mr. Yankee Pedlar, were Judge DonMacauley, unfortunately sans Laura, Ruth and Curt Glover, Edith and Dick Holton (drove to Wellesley, then Holyoke, then Hanover enjoyed seeing Freddie Carleton's daughter Anne) Mahoney (Mrs. O'Neill) an attractive cousin of Steve Mahoney ,and an old girl of Robbie's (scuttlebut), and a sweet- heart of Holyoke, was a good sport to come, and livened the party tremendously. Mr. and Mrs O'Neill driving to the game that sunny morning, with the Hazens, were much delighted in spotting Helen and Lew Cousens' roadside 1918 banner (they have a lovely old farm near Hanover) and attached "welcome, hot coffee and doughnuts" and did they enjoy their gracious hospitality!
'18's COCKTAIL PARTY AND LUNCHEON RUN BY ELLEN AND DUKE. TheDukes did a splendid job. A nippy, sparkling, sunny day with cocktails in front of the Out- ing Club, a delicious luncheon with old friends and campus greats of the faculty, made this a memorable two hours, before the Holy Cross kickoff. Enriching the entire delightful occasion, were the guests of Ellen and Duke; Pres. John Dickey and Mrs. Dickey; ex-Pres. Hopkins and Mrs. Hopkins, Sid Hayward and Mrs. Hayward; Dean Laycock's daughter, Dr. John Gile '16, the Martin Remsens '14, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence F. Whittemore (Pres., Brown Paper Cos., Berlin, N. H.), the Ford Wheldens '25, the Bill Cunninghams '19, the Warren Agrys '11, the Johnny Pianes '14, Mrs. Rip Heneage '07, the Naramores '33, champion hostesses Del Ives (Inn) and Peg Broderick (College Hall), Bob MacKinnon '47 and Harry Carey, old pal of Duke, from Time,Life and Fortune truly a distinguished group.
Other 'iBers at the luncheon were Pete andEvie Colwell (with the Ken Huntingtons '19) and Pete did a splendid job at Steve Mahoney's reunion meeting before the luncheon, in laying out the June '53 program for June 19, 20 and si; Helen and Paul Miner (their companions Ruth and Ed Wilde, were most welcome). From Montreal this summer Paul wrote, "Nous avons passee quelques jours a Medina avec mon beaufrere Hugh Whipple at sa femme. lis vont venir a Hanover avec Tom Robbins at sa femme." (comprenes; SylMoreyl) Others there were Polly and EdBooth, Margaret and Rolf Syvertsen, Doris and Phil Sanderson and pretty daughter Phyllis, Carol Morse (chic chapeaux) and Em; (Peg and Dwight Sargent have a place just across the river from Em at North Thetford both overlook Smarts Mt.) and Hittie and Reed Montgomery. Mary Olive and StanJones were weekend guests of Ellen and Duke. Other 'iBers present were Anne and JohnnyJohnson (they'd been roaming the White Mountains playing golf), Alberta and Jedge Amos Blandin, Marg and Phil Boynton (Florida this winter or bust); Chauncey Hood; and that very eligible bachelor, Ken Jones. The Em Morses had many 'iBers in for cocktails at their charming remodeled house on the Connecticut, with sumptuous big chairs you can really relax in, and with Carol's exquisite decorative taste beautifully displayed.
