It was very gratifying to note that with only six out of eight classmates contributing, our class contribution for the 1940 Alumni Fund places us number 14 on the list of contributors with 159% of our objective and certainly a vote of thanks is due Dr. Sam King, our genial and able Class Agent for his highly successful campaign to obtain that result. Congratulations Sam!
We are glad to learn through a letter from his wife, that Professor N. B. Sanborn of the University of Florida of Gainesville, Florida, has had a very fair summer and is continuing to improve in health, and is fast recovering from quite a severe illness which overtook him over a year ago. He has so far progressed that he is even now able to attend to part time duties as a Consultant at the University. He is showing good courage and sends his best wishes to all classmates.
In July last, your Secretary received a very pleasant visit from Charles R. Webster 'B2, for many years and now a member of the prominent Chicago law firm of Bailey, Webster, Gregory and Hunter. "Webbie" or "Sandy" Webster, as he was familiarly known in College was on his way to his summer home at West Harwich, on Cape Cod and it was indeed a pleasure to revive our old acquaintance and talk over the good old days of the Varsity baseball teams of 1879 and 1880 of which "Bobby" Thayer (Judge Webster Thayer '80) was Captain and of which teams only "Sandy" Webster and Charles R. Partridge 'B2 of New York City and your scribe are now the surviving members.
Only recently we have received notice of the death June 15th of Rev. William A. Service of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, familiarly known to classmates as "Balaam" Service after a long and severe illness. Detailed information as soon as received will appear with our Notes and in the Necrology in a future issue of this MAGAZINE.
