This past fall the Dartmouth department of human resources held an art and craft exhibition, “Artworks,” in Alumni Hall for Dartmouth employees. Three MALS alumni participated: Effie Cummings (MALS’04) read some of her poetry as well as the work of others; Phyllis Nemhauser (MALS’03) exhibited four pencil drawings; and Nancy Silliman ’95 (MALS’96) showed her painting, titled Fantasea Horses.
The Head-Royce School board of trustees has named Robert Lake (MALS’08) as the school’s new head of school. Head-Royce is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school of 800 students with classes from kindergarten through 12th grade. The school is located on a spacious campus in Oakland, California, and offers students a challenging program in the liberal arts and sciences in a supportive environment. Robert comes to Head-Royce after five years as the head of the upper school at Wilmington Friends School in Delaware. He wrote, “I am honored, humbled and thrilled to be coming to Head-Royce as the next Head of School. I am honored because of the school’s long tradition of excellence; I am humbled to be following Paul Chapman, such an exceptional school leader; and I am thrilled because the school’s values and mission match those I hold dear as an individual, father and educator. My wife, Heather, and our two sons Casey and Tucker are so proud to now call Head-Royce our school.” Robert has held a variety of positions in independent school administration, including director of financial aid at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire and assistant director of admissions at Middlesex School in Massachusetts. He comes from a long line of independent school educators. Both of his parents and his wife have taught in independent schools. In 2005 Robert completed the yearlong National Association of Independent Schools/E.E. Ford Aspiring School Heads training program; and while at Dartmouth he wrote his thesis, Evolution & Transformation: From the Archetypal Headmaster to the Modern Day Head of School.
