Brewer Doran reports that the Boston Alumni Club hosted the fourth Wearers of the Green dinner in May. Classmate Reggie Williams was honorary co-chair. Classmates in attendance were Jim and Martha Beattie, Nancy KepesJeton, Sandy Helve, and Brewer. Once again Brewer is kindly hosting a class party at her parents' house in Hanover on Dartmouth Night Friday, Oct. 22. There will be a class meeting on Oct. 23, followed by tailgating at the Cornell game. Last year about 30 classmates and family turned out for die game, parade, bonfire, and parties. From all reports, it was great fan.
Joe Hoffman last appeared in this column in 1982, when he and Loretta were married. Since then Loretta finished law school and Joe business school at the University of Chicago. Joe's career has included "stints in corporate planning with both AT&T and Liberty Mutual, and five years as CFO of a division of Liberty. Over those years we lived in Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Columbus, Ohio. After our last move we decided for the sake of the family that it would be good to stay put for a while. For that and other reasons, I left Liberty to start an investment advisory firm, Landfall Financial Advisors. It is a fee-only firm providing financial planning, investment advice, and investment management." Loretta and Joe live near Columbus, with kids Paul 13, Joanna 11, and Laura 7.
I inexplicably misspelled my old friend Dave Spalding's last name in a recent report about Dave's investment banking career. "My father (Lyle Spalding '52) slipped that newspaper article about me to you last year without telling me, so it was actually several months before I even saw it! Since that article only covered business, I thought I'd pass along some personal news. I've been happily married for 17 years now to Marianne (Carlton '76). We have two children, Andrew 7 and Megan 4. We all enjoy having the place in Quechee as an escape from NYC. The kids particularly love visiting 'daddy's college' when we're there."
Dave Graulich has recently published three books about classic American food. The books are The Hamburger Companion,The Hot Dog Companion, and The French FryCompanion. As Dave describes it, "the books celebrate these popular American foodstheir history, lore, the businesses that are based on them, and local places to enjoy them. The concept is to bring the same appreciation to foods everyone eats and loves that other books have brought to cigars, single-malt Scotch, and caviar." Dave and Rebecca live in San Bruno, Calif., south of San Francisco. Between Dave Graulich and Dave Shribman's columns, I'd say we have the literary market on American food pretty well covered.
Tina and I escaped to Northern California after last fall's obligatory "baby tour" to the relatives in Seattle. Between riding the cable cars with the five-year-old, and walking the halls of the Clift Hotel at 2 a.m. with the three-month-old, I managed to miss connections with Mike Moser, NilsRosenquest, and Rich Nichols. From the e-mails, voice mails, and messages, however, it seems all are doing well. We did connect with Ken Monteiro and Ken Norman at brunch. Ken (Norman) is a judge in Oakland and is deeply involved in the restructuring of California's criminal justice system. Ken (Monteiro) and Perry live near Candlestick Park and offer free parking to classmates going to 49ers games.
