You know how you sometimes associate a scent or a song with a particular person or event? Well, I've got it in my head now to think of Roth Herrlinger every time I open an Evian bottle or a gallon of juice or milk. You see, Roth wrote, in a letter, that nearly every time you pull or unscrew a plastic bottle top, you're using a product made by Portola Packaging, one of the world's largest manufacturers of these caps. And Roth, after graduating from Stanford Business School last year, is very happily working at Portola's San Jose headquarters. He is a financial analyst reporting directly to the CFO and CEO. But more importantly, he says, he will be marrying Jennifer Sweeney, "the most wonderful woman in the world (so everyone else may as well stop looking)" in Carmel, Calif., this July. Roth welcomes your news at or (408) 452-0411.

Others buzzing with family news include Jane Varner and Amit Malhotra, who welcomed their first child, a daughter named Zoe, last April. Jane reminded me of my role in their first date, eons ago, when Amit asked her to see Dangerous Liaisons at the Nugget. As arts editor of The DI struck a deal for free tickets in exchange for Amit's review of the movie. (This is no reflection upon my current journalistic integrity.) "Who knows what would have happened if we had had to decide who paid," Jane muses. And who could have guessed a business deal would influence the beginnings of a family? The couple has been hanging out with Doug Kylander (getting hisM.B.A.) and Jen Bond (getting her Ph.D. in anthropology) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. But this summer they'll be moving to Kansas City, where Amit will enter the executive development program at Sprint.

Jessica Wilson was the production manager for a low-budget film called Star Maps, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and purchased by Fox Searchlight for release sometime this year. She also wrote and directed a short film of her own that she hopes to show at a festival or two. Jessica lives in Seattle, but says she misses the East Coast.

In an entirely different part of the country, and loving it, Vladi Stanojevic lives in Albuquerque with wife Tess and five-year-old Alexander. He teaches learning disabled students at Eldorado High School and coaches boys' soccer. His team won the state championships in 1995, but last year lost in the playoffs. Nonetheless 1996 was a momentous year for Vladi, who returned for the first time in five years to his native Yugoslavia. He saw firsthand the impact of the civil war and reunited with his parents in Serbia, where he was born and his family still lives. Upon his return, Vladi published a piece in the New Mexico press decrying the unjust portrayal of Serbs as villains in the civil war. On a lighter note, last January Vladi attended a National Soccer Coaches convention, where he played in a game with Ken Himmelrnan, former Dartmouth coaches Bobby Clark and Steve Swanson, and Jeffrey Wheeler '93. Their team placed second out of 64 in the three-on-three indoor soccer tournament. Ken, who is married to Caroline and has a two-year-old son Sam, is completing a Ph.D. program in comparative literature.
