Fred Babcock has announced what is believed to be a first for our class. His grandson and namesake, Fred Babcock Cucla, of West Hartford, Conn., has been accepted by early admission for Dartmouth. Fred advises that his grandson has the qualifications. Among other things, he is a topnotch skier and was captain of his prep school football team. Congratulations, Fred! If anyone knows of any other grandson's being accepted by the College, please let me know.

Lois Aaron reports that earlier this year she saw Pic and Norb Hofman in their new environs in Menlo Park, Calif. At the time, the Hofmans were renting a house, having only recently sold their house in Scarsdale, N.Y., following Norb's retirement from Newsweek. The big news is that their son Mike is getting married this spring.

By now Tanna and Bob Fernald are well settled again in their beautiful home at Etna, N.H., after spending the winter months in Florida. While there, Tanna and Bob visited Marty and Bob Ingersoll at their retirement compound made up of three super mobile homes set up on both sides and the end of a canal, about one block from the Gulf of Mexico. While in Florida the Fernalds had weekend visits from Rose and Harry Coronis looking for a possible retirement site and from Bonnie andRoss Woodbridge. Tanna and Bob managed to get ten Dartmouth couples in to supper one night, although Jane and John Bouker were the only '36ers attending. It appears that the Naples, Fla., Dartmouth Club is very alive and active.

Just before Bob Fernald left for Florida, he attended an awards party at the Hanover Inn, where, as head agent, he accepted an award in recognition of the fact that the Class of 1936 came in third highest in gifts among all nonreunion classes in last year's Alumni Fund Drive.

Much is heard about the "loyal sons of Dartmouth" but none are more loyal than the widows of deceased classmates who are on the Memorial Committee formed by Bob. He called on Marian Billings (widow of Hank) in Duneden, Fla., and had a drink at her lovely condominium overlooking a gorgeous bay. Marian works part-time and goes north to visit her children in Vermont in the summer. Another member, Emmie Hokanson (Emil) writes that "Hokie was especially loyal to Dartmouth. In fact, I've never met an 'alum' who wasn't! I'm a product of the University of Wisconsin and am always a bit jealous of Dartmouth loyalty." And Louise Wyman (Fred), also on the committee, writes, "You bet Fred was a loyal son of Dartmouth, and I was always at his side at the College since his graduation." Other equally loyal members of the Memorial Committee include Mary Brown (Oliver), Beverly Chase (Bob), Barbara Hambleton (George), Mary Hoffman (Charles), and Madine Morton (Dick).

Stina and Bill Martens were away for the better part of two months when they parlayed a visit to their son Bill '68 and family in the Philippines into a tour of the Orient. On their way home, they stopped off at Boulder, Colo., and had dinner with Yvonne and Livy Ferris. As Bill hadn't seen Livy since graduation, it was quite a reunion. Stephen Dietz was recently named a chief executive officer of Time Buying Services of New York City.

Some 38 class members and spouses appeared at the Class Officers Weekend held in Hanover on May 4-6. A highlight of the weekend was the presentation of an award to Eddie Chamberlain for his 43 years of dedicated service to the College. Eddie is retiring as director of admissions at the end of this college year, but he will then become assistant to the president of the College, being involved chiefly with public relations. His charming wife Nona also works in the president's office. Other highlights of the weekend included the election of BobFernald as vice president of the class head agents association and the Fernalds' usual fine hospitality on Sunday morning at another great brunch for all classmates and spouses prepared by Tanna. At the class executive committee meeting, Art Toan submitted a report by the special committee appointed to investigate the possibility of lifetime dues being adopted. After a lively discussion the idea was rejected. The annual fall class meeting was set for the weekend of October 26-28, which will feature the Cornell football game. Room reservations should be made now at Bonnie Oaks Resort, Fairlee, Vt. 05045, with a deposit check of $50 included with your reservation.

All classmates, spouses, widows, children, and other members of the family are again cordially invited to the annual lobster fete hosted by Tommy and Laura Thomas at their place in West Bath, Me., scheduled for Saturday, August 4.
