The Campaign for Dartmouth moved officially into higher gear, or so it seemed to us Big Apple residents, following the gala and splendid Dartmouth Night in New York on February 23. On this genuinely heartwarming and comradely occasion, the grand ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria was packed to the upper-most balcony — the fourth in a series of dinners to initiate the five-year campaign for $160,000,000 for the College.

At Dartmouth Night in New York, the Class of 1943 held its collective head high. FrankHartmann, our former class president and now president of class presidents (such a neat trick — have to keep repeating that he's done it) was chairman for the occasion and, with Margo, handsomejy and beautifully enhanced the dais. The College's newest Trustee, George Munroe, with Ellie, adding further luminous grace to the dais. Mingled with well over 1,000 other Dartmouth supporters for the occasion were Bill andPeggy Seidman (he is chairman, national leadership gifts committee for the compaign), and Bob and Pauline Field he's a campaign executive committee member). Others enjoying the company, the Glee Club, the talks by President Kemeny and Dickey, etc. were: Ed Lider, Larry Noble, Bob Krumm, Eddie O'Brien, Paul Young, Bob Higgons, Bud Hall, Graham Conklin, and our adopted class member, Nancy Elliott. The closing color slides filled a screen as large as the Waldorf's stage, accompanied by the Glee Club's "Dartmouth Undying" — not an unmoistened eye or unquickened heart in the whole place.

From Bill Whitmarsh's family: "I think you have already noted in the magazine that Bill had a terrible auto accident in February 1977. He was taken directly from southern Vermont to Mary Hitchcock Hospital, where they performed miracles. His progress has been painful and slow but steady. He is at home now and enjoys letters and visits very much." For those who would like to write to Bill, the address is: Old Bull Lane, Little Compton, R.I. 02837. Keep up the good fight, Bill!

Ted Driscoll, president and treasurer of T. G. Driscoll Construction Co., was recently named a director of the Holyoke Mutual Insurance Company. Ted is a former president of the North Shore Master Builders' Association, has served in leadership capacities for the North Shore Children's Hospital in Salem, Mass., and promotes his sea-going interests through the Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead and the International E-22 Yacht Racing Association.

Treasurer Church Leonard serves as our Hanover correspondent, and long may he continue to do so. Church heard from Roger Gaskill, who had visited Hanover briefly in December. Roger and wife Jeanne have been living in the Detroit area and he has been working for Chrysler Corp. since graduation. The Gaskills have three married children.

Also from Church: "Vic Schermerhorn transferred to Lehigh after his sophomore year to get some engineering courses he couldn't get then at Dartmouth. He and his wife Joan have bought land in New London, N.H., and plan to build on it when he retires in several years or sooner. Vic has been with Standard Oil of Ohio for 31 years and is living in Rocky River, Ohio, near Cleveland. I thought our classmates would like to know that not everyone retires to the Sun Belt. There are still a few who pick the rough environment of the northern New England states."
