Groundhog Day, Valentines, and Winter Carnival pack this month with a punch! The story according to a six-year-old nephew must be true: The clock must have been thrown out the window since time is flying!
News from the sunbelt comes from RussFehr, now in Tucson, Ariz. Relating his "many great capers and more not so great" since graduation, he reveals his work in the past as "a conga player in a rock band, a laborer for a construction company (with Carlton Frost for a couple of months), a picture-framer, and a dispatcher." Now, however, Russ has returned to academia. At the University of Arizona he studies for his doctorate in anthropology. After spending the last couple of summers on a dig near Flagstaff, Russ had preferentially destined himself for a career in archaelology. He, his fiancee Laurie, and Livingston, a Yaliearchaeologist, keep busy with "frequent trips to Nogales, Mexico, for cheap tequilla ... the kind with the worm in the bottle." Congratulations on your engagement, Russ, and good luck!
In search of an internship in medicine this past fall was Matt Putnam, on a visit to Denver and other western cities. Matt, who finishes this year at Dartmouth Medical School, relates that his classmate, Wayne Whitmore, has the same plans for an internship after graduation. Best of luck to you both!
A message from Bruce "Willie" Williamson recalled, near the end of October, the Harvard weekend in Hanover: The "cold chill" of the north wind was "nothing that a little antifreeze couldn't solve." An executive committee meeting planned at last minute found only hardcore members of the group meeting in Reed Hall - Willie and a new member, Jerry Bowe - on Saturday morning. He did run into members Chris Gates and Tom Berdeja and his letter names another new committee member, Buff Davis, who was also there for the weekend. Willie has good news up his sleeve for the Class. His plans include the organizing of "a task force to seek out an appropriate class project that could be presented to the Class." Also mentioned in his note was Paul Mesches, another new committee member who was on the spot that weekend. Congratulations to these bearers of new blood for the group!
The night before November first saw numerous spooks at a party in Denver: "Cowboy" Mike Miller, George "Pumpkin Man"Frost, John Shepard '76 (at the University of Denver Law School) John and Annie Upton '75 and '76 (now at DU Law School and DU Development Office) and Laurie Hawley '76 (who works for Tom Thumb Nursery School). During the gathering, famed Halloween hostess Candy Neville called in from the Stanford University School of Business Administration, lamenting the absence there of such an affair.
A note dated November 6 from PeterHaffenreffer relates the union on September 12 near New York City of Chuck Bralver and Belinda Dorfman. With Pete as best man, ushers Mike DeGenring and Rick Thatcher, both at the Harvard University School of Business Administration, "performed the ritual Hungarian Hurt Dance on brother Chuck Friday before the ceremony in a bar on the east side ... (when) the spirit of death passed closely over Chuck's head," according to Peter. Likewise jubilant, the reception after the rite revealed the groom to be "in a semi-recovered state" and the ushers as "semi-comatose." Peter admits that a "good time was had by all" and that he "can't wait for the next victim." Heartiest congratulations go to Chuck and Belinda!
Cited in a clipping from Valley News last fall was David Roulston, a staff member of Headrest in Lebanon, N.H. In an article introducing a new staff member, Dave is mentioned as one of the counseling organization's three key members who provide services for individuals, families, and couples. Formerly a volunteer for Hotline, the article notes, Dave has worked with Headrest since 1971 and has co-directed the organization's Opening Doors program, placing high school students in volunteer positions at local social service agencies. Also recalling his study and teaching of karate, the clip cites his activity in forming the LISTEN food-buying club in Lebanon and his joining the counseling department of Headstart in 1975. In addition, Dave has been program director of the Human Resources Council, a personal-growth movement in the area, according to the article. This sounds like very good and interesting work, Dave. Keep it up!
In an article sent at the same time, the Associated Press reported in the September 21 issue of the Lewiston (Maine) Daily Sun that Robert McKernan and his brother John McKernan '70 are "carving out a monopoly for themselves in Maine Republican circles." It describes them as "young, well educated, attractive and politically savvy," saying that they "control the campaign machinery for the top two GOP races in the state this year." John was noted as a two-term legislator and assistant minority leader in the state's House who directed the state campaign to re-elect the President. Bob was cited as a legislative aide to State Senate President Joseph Sewall and a former field coordinator for the state Republican party. He also managed the campaign of U.S. Senate Candidate Robert A. G. Monks. According to the article, Senator Sewall has described them as seasoned political hands who enjoy politics — adding that their youth is a sorely needed asset for the GOP. The Senator admits that "they are two of the best we have." These two are working hard and also deserve a word of congratulations for such fine recognition!
A third newsclip sent with this bunch was taken from the October 4 edition of the Manchester Union Leader and features JamesG. Noucas Jr. as attending Boston College Law School this year. A photograph accompanys the mention of his graduation from Laconia High School and Dartmouth with honors, and cites his activities while at the College: a member of Herrot Fraternity and Sphinx and a dormitory chairman. Say hello to Boston for us, Jim!
News received after around the first of December will appear in the next column. Meanwhile, just remember that 1977 was resolved to be a news year, so send some!
