After a long, cool summer in Southern California the Dartmouth Club came alive with a reception for students getting ready to leave for Hanover, hosted by Robert S. Morris '36 at his spacious offices. The event, now scheduled annually, is an excellent way for incoming freshpersons to meet each other before arriving at Dartmouth and, in some cases, allows arrangements for travelling together with new-found friends.

Our first luncheon, in September, was held at Taix Restaurant at 1911 Sunset Boulevard, now established as our regular monthly meeting place unless special events develop. The food is good, the price reasonable (about $4), and the location reasonably central for far-flung Los Angeles. Our first guest of the year was Dartmouth's Assistant Secretary for Job Placement, Al Cook '62, who most ably brought us up to date on what is happening in Hanover. Al was able to promote his program and to stress its importance to the overall Dartmouth Plan wherein it (hopefully) provides jobs to occupy students during their off-campus semesters. The assistance of all alumni in providing information or availability of such jobs for Dartmouth students on 3, 6, 9. or 12 month bases is requested. You should contact Southern California Job Placement Chairman Tom Towse '58 at (213) 655-8110.

A most delicious chicken dinner was provided at the Fogcutter steakhouse on Dartmouth Night, with a fine turn-out of 47 persons. LarryWelch '25 was senior man present, as club President Nick Carter '41 was careful to point out. The class with most attendees was 1956, including Federal Public Defender John Van deKamp, attorney John Liebman, Bob Long, and club Secretary H. Flint Ranney - certainly a distinguished group. Mark Saginor '58 broke a long record of non-attendance in order to see the football highlights film from last year projected by Joe Scott '58. Jerry Greenfield '61 confessed that he has been so busy with work and studies that he needed help in his function, as club treasurer, and the meeting unanimously ap proved the on-the-spot nomination of his wife Corky to the position of assistant treasurer Now we may be able to get our checks depositee in something less than two months!

Our October luncheon was successfully staged at Taix with special guest W. Russell Barn '57, who spoke about his duties as vice president of CBS News and general manager of KNXT CBS Channel 2 in Los Angeles. He also covered the interesting facets of government intervention in the media.

Forthcoming events include a football reception in December, a meeting with Jake Crouthamel '60 in January, Dartmouth Day at Santa Anita on March 30, 1974, and our annual dinner and election of officers on May 20 when we will be honored to have as our guests President and Mrs. John Kemeny. Current plans call for that dinner to be held at the new Marriott Hotel near the airport.

If you are not receiving our monthly newsletters, you haven't paid your dues. Contact Secretary Ranney for information on that and on our Scholarship Fund, currently providing $l,000 annual assistance to a Dartmouth student from Southern California. We would like to provide financial help for more students but cannot unless we bolster our fund.
