This is coming out of my trusty typewriter mid-week between the Harvard and Yale games and by the time you read it the entire football season will be history! At this writing we're fantastic and I hope we've ended the season the champs!
The first frigid weekend of the fall season brought almost twenty classmates together in Hanover for what has become a fabulous forty football fiesta get-together to see the Brown game. A report from Don Rainie who supplied me with a preliminary bird's eye view follows. "The pre-game luncheon at the Mac Millen's was well attended and the menu (put together by Crosbie, personally) was excellent. Needless to say, before and after the game there was extensive fraternizing. Bob had concocted screwdrivers for the crowd—the supply disappearing in short order. Dinner in the Drake Room of Hopkins Center, was somewhat more reserved. Either people were running out of gas or the afternoon's cold fresh air exposure was taking its toll.
"In any event, these are a sampling of people in attendance. Bacon, Gensel, Blanchard, Graham, Arwe, Bird, Acer, Don McMahon, desieyes, E. T. Browne, Gordie Wentworth, Little, Ostrander, Smallwood, Porter, Moody, Whitcher, MacMillen, and Ramie. For a class project which appeared to be falling on its face earlier in the week, it certainly developed into a great party."
Next year isn't too far off and President-in-residence MacMillen has already reserved a block of rooms for the weekend of Oct. 8-10 (football opponent as yet unannounced). If you've got your 1971 appointment calender on hand reserve those dates! More about that later in the year.
Word's at hand that Page Smith who's a USC professor was the guest speaker one evening this past summer at the Santa Cruz (Calif.) Business and Professional Women's Club. Page is a member of the American Historical Association, an organization formed to report on the status of women in the historical professions and has just had a book published, "Daughters of the Promised Land," which discusses the role of women in American history. Also during this past summer we learned that Rick Davidson left his position as New York City Commissioner of Public Works and joined a firm called the Eggers Partnership who are architects and planners. There he is heading their expansion activities with particular emphasis on the development of new construction systems and methods.
A brief note on hand from auto-man BobBreech says that the only thing "new" in his life are birthdays are making him old - though he still won't admit it. I imagine that the youngest of '40's is now over the half-century mark in age and we'll all start counting backwards henceforth just like our wives have been doing! From Milwaukee Julie Wachs checks in with his annual resolution to revisit the Hanover Plain, but equally as often something interferes to force a change in plans. Six summers ago he and wife Alice attended Alumni College which they found an "extremely worthwhile experience."
Last March in this space we reported that Creight Holden was selling his resort hotel and golf club, subject to I.R.S. approval. Fortunately the wheels of government turn very slowly and the approval had not come through when his purchaser went bankrupt. Over drinks and a delicious dinner in New York, Creight's only comment was, "It's better to be lucky than smart." On a recent parents' weekend at my own son's college we spent a very enjoyable part of an evening with Joe O'Hare in Camp Hill, Pa. a suburb of Harrisburg. Joe has three daughters and two sons and spends his time flying an executive plane jointly owned by two local companies. Regrettably he's frequently in cities with various classmates, but rarely sees them 'cause his bosses give him little advance warning as to where—or when— they're flying and he never knows how long he'll be in any one spot.
Thanks to those of you who sent DonRainie notes on the back of your dues notices and thanks to Don for passing them on to me. Next month as a result we'll be able to pass on various items on those of you who've had something to say. If you haven't paid up how about sending Don your $7.00!
To close I'm happy to report that '40's are still supplying freshmen to the college. This year's class of '74 includes Jim Buck's Brian, Ted Ellsworth's Dick, Roily Hillas's Jim, Walt Kelley's Tim, Norm Lazare's Lewis, Carl Maier's Peter, Jim Scott's Jeff, George Sheldon's John and Tom Todd's Duncan.
