And a happy new college year! (Good summer?)

Convocation time generates a special kind of excitement and expectation for the fine young men returning to campus, for the freshman generation, especially, and even for some old gaffers who live it up nostalgically by harking back to those days of promise 37 years ago. So, in that spirit, we begin our last series of columns with something from the past as prologue:

DARTMOUTH SONS OF '34 — The 1967 Dartmouth Commencement marked a notable milestone, sending forth into the wide, wide world what must be a nearrecord number of sons of '34. Fathers who viewed with satisfaction and pointed with pride on June 11 were Ted Thompson (Theodore Jr. '66), Al Hine (Albert III),Marty Johnston (Robert A.), Bill Judd (William H. Ill), Wit McConnochie (Kenneth M.), Stan Neill (Stanley E. Jr.), Stan Smoyer (William S.) and Ye Olde Scribe, who is grateful to his young man, Larry, for a dream come true.

As one set of sons completed the task, another begins it. Joining the Dartmouth fellowship in the Class of 1971 are the sons of - Chuck Cotsworth (Charles M.), DickEmerson (John G.), Randy Klinefelter (Peter R.), Doug Leighton (Jeffrey E.) and DanTaggert (Daniel W. F.)

Okie O'Keeffe's son, Peter '68, re-elected captain of the Dartmouth varsity wrestling team. Captain Pete placed fourth last season in the 123-pound class of the New England Wrestling Championships and, in dual meets, had a 7-1 record.

HONORS - A bumper crop of honors for men of '34 during the summer months. To nobody's surprise, Mr. 1934 - Bill Scherman - received the coveted Dartmouth Alumni Council Award. If the College didn't have such an award, it would have to invent one for a guy like William - Class agent for six years, class president for nine, class newsletter editor for 17, 1960 Newsletter Editor of the Year, President of the Newsletter Editors Association in 1959 and member of the Alumni Council. His citation says it most eloquently:... For your distinguished labors in behalf of your class and your college, and for the high regard in which you are held by your fellow alumni.

Mayo Cohen, elected president of the Windham (Conn.) County Bar Association. Mayo, who hangs his shingle at 756 Main Street, Willimantic, reports that his daughter Leila entered Russell Sage College (her Mom's alma mater) in Troy, N. Y., this fall and that son, Norman, a Windham High senior who was selected to attend Boys' State at the University of Connecticut this summer, aims to follow Pop's footsteps to Hanover as a member of the Class of 1972. ...

J. Clarence (Peanuts) Davies, man of many talents and achievements, elected treasurer of the U. S. Lawn Tennis Association. ...

Bill Haist, elected first vice president of the Glass Appliance Manufacturers Association. Bill is president and manager of the Sprague Meter Company of Bridgeport, Ctinn. ...

Dr. Junie Kneisel, named associate professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and acting head of surgery at McCook Hospital in Hartford. Junie, who got his M.D. at Harvard, had been on the Yale School of Medicine faculty since 1962 and previously served medical tours of duty in Boston, White Plains, N. Y., the Bronx and New York. ...

Bob Newman, new vice president and president-elect of the Massachusetts Library Association. Bob takes over as president in 1968. Versatile Robert also is a trustee of the City Savings Bank, Hancock Shaker Community and St. Luke's Hospital - all in Pittsfield, Mass. - and a member of the Central Pittsfield Development Panel. ...

Art Willis, elected senior vice president of Discount Corporation of New York, dealers in U. S. Government and Agency securities. Art, who got an M.B.A. from Columbia, joined Discount in 1956 after serving as manager of the securities department of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. ...

MERCY MISSION — Dr. Bob (RobertM.) Smith emerged as a king-sized hero in the kind of story we like to hear and write about. Bob, chief anesthesiologist at Boston's Children's Hospital Center, and his Margaret were spending Fourth of July morning on a Massachusetts beach when an emergency plea came through for medical help in putting down a major polio epidemic in Nicaragua. By 1 p.m. that day, Bob and Margaret were winging to Managua. Bob worked around the clock for days with a score of other U. S. physicians and brought the epidemic under control. To top it off, Bob was re-elected president of Children's Hospital medical staff. Hippocrates would have been as proud of Bob as is all of 1934.

Sorrowfully, we must report that since we last went to press, the Class of 1934 lost two of its most devoted members — StuCampbell and George Copp Jr. Stu lost a long and valiant battle against cancer May 25. Ollie Sargent reports that although Stu did not live to see his daughter Deborah graduate from Hiram College last June, one of his last acts was to order her a car as a graduation gift. George, apparently recovering from a stroke, died suddenly July 6 of a coronary occlusion. We take the liberty of quoting from a letter from his widow, Marge (Harry Wallace's sister-in-law): "... I hope that friends of George's at his beloved Dartmouth are mine. His love of College and Class brought him so much happiness. ... To George, the Class of 1934 was the greatest; Dartmouth, the greatest. It will ever be."

SALUTE - To the hardest working man on the 1934 Alumni Fund team — Head Agent Bill Emerson, whose persuasive appeals were answered by 398 members of the class for a total of more than $40,000. And, a deep bow, as well, to Steve Meigher's widow, Denny, for devotion and dedication to Dartmouth above and beyond the call of duty. ...
