Dr. Alden Vaughan has retired from the Centre College faculty after 18 years of outstanding service. The Board of Trustees of the College has granted him the rank of Professor Emeritus saying of him, "He has been a highly regarded teacher and competent scholar. In addition to teaching classical languages and literature he has offered a course in general humanities which has held a unique place in the experience of Centre students." Alden received both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he is a member of Cum Laude Society, Linguistic Society of America, Classical Association of the Midwest and South, and the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts. The week of our fall party at Woodstock was a busy one for many 17'ers. On Monday of that week the Brookses had a dinner party at the Pomfret Valley Guest House to honor a local couple who are moving to Washington, D. C. Invited to attend the party were Ralph and Ethel Sanborn, Normand Mary McCulloch and Walt Walters, all of whom were in Woodstock at the time. Before the dinner we were all entertained for cocktails at the home of the guests of honor, Mr. and Mrs. Halleck Lefferts.

Then on Wednesday of that same week Doc Walters put on a dinner party at the Hanover Inn for a few of the early birds. The dinner was preceded by cocktails at the Boyntons, but they were provided by the good doctor himself. After the cocktails everyone adjourned to the Hanover Inn for dinner at which the following were present: our host, Doc Walters in person, Bob and Gail Boynton, Bill Eaton, Dr. and Mrs. John Bowler '15, Norm and MaryMcCulloch, Gene and Lucile Towler, and Don and Helen Brooks. A very pleasant evening was enjoyed by those present.

On Thursday, September 22, 17'ers began to arrive at Woodstock in numbers and that evening, at the Woodstock Inn, we held both a reunion committee meeting and a class meeting with only the men present. No decisions of world-shattering importance were reached, but several important ones were discussed. With class business disposed of the men were rejoined by the ladies in the Inn cocktail lounge. On Friday noon Helen Brooks entertained the ladies for luncheon and a ride around the beautiful countryside, while some of the men went over to Hanover. Again Friday evening the cocktail lounge at the Inn got a good workout, some of the late arrivals being there for the first time. Then on Saturday the whole crowd went to Hanover to watch the football game with the University of Massachusetts, which Dartmouth won by a fairly close score. After the game all returned to Woodstock where the Inn put on a special dinner for us. Some 53 classmates were present. Some who are usually with us on such occasions were absent this year including Mose and Pauline Hutchins, Gil andJane Swett, Bill and Sally Sewall, and Howard and Dorothy Stockwell. They were truly missed.

Those who were present all or part of the time were: Sherm and Helen Smith, George Allison (all the way from Wyoming), Guy and Marjorie Richardson, Len and Laurene Reade, Pete and Lucy Olds, Bill and Helen Birtwell, Vic and Irene Smith, Mott and Fran Brown, Don and Marion O'Leary, Gene and Lucile Towler, Larry and Lucile Nourse, Norm and Mary McCulloch, Ralph and Ethel Sanborn, Jack Saladine, Spique and Ruby Maclntyre, Barney and Adele Thielscher, Sandy and Tommy Lynch, Sumner and Charlotte Emerson, Hank and Polly Loudon, Walt Walters, A 1 and Nellie Bushnell, Bill Eaton, Bob and Gail Boynton, Duke and Dot Howe, Al and Maud Edgerton, Ruth Sisson, Jo Weeks, Ev Carroll, and Don and Helen Brooks. George Clark and his wife were at the game but couldn't get over to Woodstock to join the group for dinner.
