Albert Steiger Co., of which Chan Steiger is treasurer, recently opened its third branch store in the new shopping center on East Main Street, Westfield, Mass. It's like "coming home" for Chan as he was born in Westfield in 1893, and the Steiger stores had their beginning there nearly 100 years ago.
Heinie Wright reports that his third daughter, Robin, after graduating from the University of New Hampshire summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with her major in mathematics, has just returned from a year of study at the University of Marburg, Germany. She will instruct in math at U. of N. H. this year, and at the same time study for her Master's.
The Bob Chases are building a new home on land that Bob has owned for some years and which is just a few yards from their present house. They will live on the first floor but have accommodations for guests on the second floor.
Click Clarke has a slight change of address which you should note. His P.O. box is now 431 at Warrenville, Ill. He is heading for Florida early in December where he will be found in Royal Palm Park, Hallendale - right across Fed 1 from Gulf Stream Race Track. He would be glad to see any 17'er in the vicinity!
Hen Sturgess writes that he is far from being retired: in fact, he claims to be working harder and longer hours than he has in the past 15 years.
Ted Lonnquest writes that son, Ted Jr., had the good fortune to be selected for promotion to captain in the Navy last month in his twentieth year of naval service - an event which made all of the family very happy. Daughter Elaine and her Foreign Service Officer husband, Sam, and their family were on vacation in northern Pakistan during August, returning to Lahore about the first of September, just as the war with India broke out. Elaine and the children are now safe in Teheran, which is considerably more reassuring than earlier uncertainties about what seemed to be a rather active combat area.
Neither heat nor rain could possibly dampen the enthusiasm of those '17'ers who attended the fall party at Woodstock. The week started off unbearably hot and on Friday the rains came down, but by that time we were all comfortably settled at the Woodstock Inn. The rain continued through Friday night, but Saturday dawned fair and by game time the weather was beautiful.
Ralph and Ethel Sanborn were the first to arrive, coming Sunday and staying the entire week. Norm and Mary McCulloch and Bill and Sally Sewall were the next to arrive, coming on Tuesday in the hope of getting in some golf before the party got underway. Then, with the arrival on Thursday of Vic and Irene Smith, Bill Eaton, Jack Saladine, Gil Swett (all the way from Florida), Mose and Pauline Hutchins, Sumner and Charlotte Emerson, Pete and Lucy Olds, Barney and Adele Thielscher and Duke Howe, all members of the '17 Executive Committee were present for our meeting that evening, including your secretary.
The officers made their reports and we were all sorry to hear Mose Hutchins resign as Editor of the "SENTRY" after 11 years of service. His resignation was accepted with great regret. With the business meeting out of the way, we were free to devote ourselves to just plain fun, as promised.
Walt Walters was present, as was GeorgeAllison, Walt from Minnesota and George all the way from Casper, Wyo., just for the party. Mott and Fran Brown were here for the first time, and Howie and Dot Stockwell and Spique and Ruby MacIntyre for the first time in a long while. And there were Sandy and Tommy Lynch, Gene and Lucile Towler, Bill and Helen Birtwell, Guy and Marjorie Richardson, Bob and Anita Scott, Len and Laurene Reade, Larry and Lucile Nourse and Ralph and Evelyn Britton and their dinner guests, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Nicholas.
Sherm and Helen Smith were here and Sherm was singled out to succeed Mose Hutchins as Editor of the "SENTRY," a task he accepted with seeming pleasure. Then there were others such as Ralph Cocks and Phil Evans. Bob and Gail Boynton came over from Hanover. The two Ev's, Carroll and Robie, came for dinner Saturday evening, and Jo Weeks came on Friday and stayed with the Brookses.
On Friday noon Helen Brooks invited all of the gals to come to the house for lunch. Thirteen had a distaff reunion and then proceeded by car to South Woodstock for a visit to the Green Mountain Perkins Academy and Historical Association where they were taken on a personally conducted tour by Mrs. Byron Dexter.
At the Inn Saturday after the Dartmouth-New Hampshire game, which we attended as a group, 54 persons sat down to dinner (11 more than a year ago) during which we were entertained at the piano by Ev Robie. All in all, it was a grand party! Everyone present agreed to return next year at the time of the first football game. So mark your calendars now!
Norm McCulloch and Mary stayed on at Woodstock for a week to attend the Doscher School of Photography. Norm is the proud possessor of some splendid Leica equipment, but doesn't know how to use it to advantage and hopes that his week of study will correct all that.
Heinie Wright was seen at the game with daughter, Robin, but they were unable to join us at the Inn.
