June 1960 JOHN F. CONNERS, WINTHROP J. SNOW

Well, it happened. Our John Palmer has retired, after 46 years. John has finally joined the "Rocking Chair Society." Herb Austin is now the Editor of the Townsman, Wellesley, Mass. A very nice letter from Al Richmond. Another one, too, from Ed Leech, particularly so because he promises help with the history. We need men with his experience.

Eight men were awarded Reynold's Fellowships for study overseas during the 1960-61 academic year, and Lester K. Little '57 was one of them. He will study Medieval History in Paris and Rome. The United States Senate has confirmed the Presidential reappointment of Sigurd S. Larmon as a member of the United States Advisory Commission on Information for a term of three years, expiring January 27, 1963. This is Sig's third term.

Another sad part of this job is the writing of obituaries. I have purposely kept mention from these notes. Now this exception. Margaret Burleigh died April 4 after a long hospitalization at Manchester, N. H. Funeral services were held April 6.

A last-minute bit of news saves this column once again. Sig and Kay Larmon attended a White House dinner for General De Gaulle. Fred and Louise Davidson are as far as Japan and will be home in June. Penny Aborn sent a long telegram for Sunbird, and it was much appreciated. Constance and Ellsworth Buck returned from their cruise May 1. George andHelen Boggs extended their Florida stay two weeks. Charlie and Jeannette Batchelder plan to close their winter home soon. Gay Dellinger found a moon shell on the beach at Sunbird. It was a rare find. The Gus Fullers made Sunbird quite a success. Caleb Niles, the third one on the committee, spends eight months in Florida, saving four for N. H. Ever so many tell me that John Peppard writes such a nice letter. John's daughter lives only one and a half miles away, so he commutes. Rosy and Katherine Hinman have been going to Clearwater for twelve years. They must like it. Everyone was glad to see Marion Naramore looking so well. Jim andAnne Margeson had good fun at Sunbird. The Paul Smiths have been making Florida for eighteen years, but return to Hanover when the gardens start working. Jeff and Elinor Beals like Florida so much, they plan to make it their permanent home. Al and Edith Humphries like Florida, too, and have signed up for another Sunbird. Likewise, Marion and Ern Learoyd. Imagine! The Floyds drove over from Georgia in a snow storm.

I promised Ellsworth that I would contact the few unsigned for the 50th questionnaire, in order that we could carry on with the second phase of our program. Now, after four months, the score stands: in, 130 and out, 89. That's different. You know, this retirement seems just fine, but the thing that I miss most is a staff, and I'll be darned if I will longhand 89 letters to delinquents. Mark you well, we are no better than a good class; and, in my opinion, you are a long, long way from such distinction unless two things happen very soon. I want 91 questionnaires on file soon, and I want news.

So sorry to do it this way, but here is the list of the missing:
