The Dartmouth Club of Central New York met March 22 to honor John Dickey and hear him speak. But in a surprise turn, Bill Morton was made to share the spotlight when the Club presented him with a framed scroll which read: "William G. Morton, Class of 1928. In appreciation of your dedicated and effective service to Dartmouth in Central New York, we honor you. You represent that which we regard highest in the relationship of an alumnus to his college."
Among the messages read was one from his Class which ended, "To your embarrassment, you are called 'Dynamic Bill Morton' - a descriptive name - for no responsibility has ever been too great and no detail has ever been too small for you to undertake if it was in Dartmouth's interest. We are proud of you."
Jack Rose has been working several months for Freedomland, U.S.A., the world's largest outdoor entertainment center, opening June 19 in the northeast Bronx - "more fabulous than Disneyland" says Jack. He is also continuing his research and counselling work with American Viewpoint, Inc., Foundation for Religious Action. He says he is too busy with extracurricular activities for family making, but still available!
Barney and Ellen Norton's daughter, Jean, and William Booth were married February 20. Barney also reports that on March 6, at the annual prep school ski meet in the Middlebury College Snow Bowl, he saw Ambie McLaughlin, whose son was a member of the Kimball Union Academy team. Barney was there because his son, John, was forerunning the downhill.
Heinie Hart's Reserve Plan, Inc. filed a $2,250,000 antitrust suit in Federal Court in New York on March 24 against Arthur Murray and his dance studio corporation. Reserve Plan charged Mr. Murray had conspired with others to block the corporation from doing business with his 400 dance studios. Reserve Plan is in the business of purchasing installment contracts for collection.
Al Carpenter and Mrs. Virginia Wright Turner, both of Hastings-on-Hudson, were married March 12. Howard A. Carpenter was best man for his father. Al, in addition to being assistant controller of the Johns-Manville Corporation, is our New York City area Regional Chairman for the Alumni Fund drive this year.
The New York Times of March 20 carried a picture of Rupe Thompson, president of Textron, Inc., and in a four-column "profile" of him stated that he appears destined to become chairman of the board within a year. Textron and Textron Electronics employ 21.000 persons and have sales of over $300,000,000 a year. Rupe and Doris left in late March for a vacation in Europe, principally skiing in Switzerland.
Bill and Greta Cogswell leave May 5 for a month's vacation in England, Scotland, and Scandinavia. Europe seems to be in many people's plans: Cyrene and Bill Williams say they are "planning a trip to Europe before we are eighty." Their son. Bill Jr., is at the First National Bank in Boston and just bought a home in South Lincoln. ... Vic and Mary Hartjens are going to Europe in May; Vic's hobby is a small runabout boat at Lake Seneca, a half-hour drive from his home in Washington, D. C.... Clark and Amber Harrington are touring Switzerland, Italy, and Greece. Clark retired from CBS last year and moved to Brookfield, Conn.
Jim McConnon's daughter, Ann, and Kenneth Chase were married in St. Mary's Episcopal Church in St. Paul last November. His son, Tom '54, works for Procter and Gamble in Kansas City. Jim, a divisional manager of Waddell and Reed, Inc., St. Paul, underwriters of mutual funds, says his last vacation was to Acapulco last December.
Lt. Col. Bob Reed, just retired from the Air Force, has bought a home in Dallas.... Rib Foster, of the same city, does a great deal of boating on Lake Texhoma. He is manager of the Trading Department of Merrill Lynch's office in Dallas. His daughter graduated from LSU as a Spanish major, wishes she had chosen French because she now works for the French Line in Dallas.
George and Suzanne Pasfield have their first grandchild - George Jr. and Sheila came through with George III.... Ernie and JeanWright's daughter, Wendy, is graduating from Springside School in June and is going into nursing. Ernie 4th is a junior at Penn Charter School. The Wrights vacationed in Jamaica in February.
Bill Goudy says they went to Williamsburg, Va., last fall; are planning a vacation in Hawaii this summer. Daughter, Lee, graduated from Englewood Hospital nurses' training and married Bob Grimes, son of Art Grimes '34. His son, Bill, was married November 28, 1959.
While making a call on the librarian of the Friends School in Baltimore, Herm Schnepel found to his surprise she was the wife of Bob Richardson. Bob is dean of boys and guidance counselor at the same school, where he has been the past eighteen years, and says he plans on coming back to our 35th reunion in 1962. Bob's father, Prof. "Cheerless" Richardson, died in 1950.
