Everybody knows that '51 medics do turn up in the strangest places, but we pass on Dr. Al Tarlov's address just the same — in case you want to send him a cake with a file in it. Al's in the Army — he says - but the name of that unit is Stateville Penitentiary, Joliet, Ill., and the corporal's name used to be Touhey. "Welcome any travelers to visit me here," says Dr. Tarlov a bit hopefully. "I am full time at the penitentiary."
Well, too bad that now we have to go and ruin a good story with the facts. But it seems that after med school, residency and research work at the University of Chicago, the Army simply decided that 01' Dr. Tarlov was just the fellow to go down to Stateville for research work on blood disorders. So there he is serving out his, er-ah, Army duty, but at least he gets to have Joan and the two young-sters with him (a third was due in January). One thing, Al. When you get out, steer clear of Cicero.
Another medic, Dr. Dick Spencer, writes that he, Gwen, Carolyn (three), and Jennifer (one) "are thriving on Boston beans" while he aims for his Harvard Ph.D. in biochemistry next June, and plans research there afterward. Other '51s in Beantown's white coats: Peter Dallman (hematology at Children's Hospital), Giles Hamlin (surgery at Boston City Hospital), Stan Van Den Noort (neurology at Boston City). From hospitals, let's check ...
THE ALTAR: It was a Christmastime wedding in the South for Jack Lotz and Eleanor Elizabeth Little in Alexander City, Ala., on December 19. Understand they met in Jacksonville, Fla., where Jack's in insurance, and will live in Jacksonville. Our best wishes also to Pete Cummings and Arabella Gay Gerber who were married in November in Fremont, Mich., where Pete's in industrial relations for Gerber Products. It will be a mid-winter wedding for Joe Caldwell and Marcia Thompson of Croton-On-Hudson, N. Y. Marcia is a Syracuse graduate who studied in Europe for two summers. Brace Foster will travel to London in the spring for his marriage to English debutante, Gillian Robertson. Brace is currently with Union Carbide in New York.
CRIBS IDE CHATTER: The Hap Persons, who seem to make a habit of having babies around Christmas, have done it again. David joined his two big sisters on December 2, and Hap sounds pretty happy about the arrival of a male heir. But the rumor that Dave will start heeling for Cabin and Trail next summer is unfounded. Oh yes, Hap also mentions that there's a new Person abode in Plymouth, Mass., with an ocean view and "a green beacon for wandering '515."...Up in Hanover, Frank and Ann Smallwood had their fourth - a second son. Donald arrived in the familiar surroundings of Mary Hitchcock Memorial last November 30. And in Evanston, non-believers may drop by and see for themselves that Dave ("Big Daddy") Hilton is really changing diapers. Dave Jr. came along November 4.
Interesting letter from Israel tells of Bill Leffler's travels. Bill, Alana and daughter Carrie left shortly after Bill's ordination as a rabbi in Cincinnati last June, and have been in Jerusalem where Bill is studying "Hebrew, Bible, and the land," and auditing courses at the Hebrew University. They expect to head back via Southern Europe in April, reaching home about May 1.
Things must be good in the dental instru- ments' business. Alex Sarjeant advises from Newtown, Conn., that he's bought a Cadillac, then mentions by Christmas card that he's taking flying lessons and hopes to solo in i960 so he can cover his territory by air.
It turns out that Roy Reynolds is skipper of that LST we mentioned last month. And June and Stephen were mighty glad to welcome him to their new home in Coronado in December, as Roy returned after several months in the Pacific.
There must be more free time than usual these days for Paul Staley. Paul wrote in December that his hobbies were collecting martinis and distributing Rockefeller buttons, and we understand the latter has since gone out of style. The Staleys, including Christopher (five-and-a-half), Jes (three), a dog ("Mister Rockefeller"), and five hamsters, moved to Sacramento in January. Paul is group manager for synthetics at the Procter and Gamble plant there.
Among our barristers, Charley Richardson is still practicing in San Francisco, doing mostly trial work. Charley writes of Frisco's charms as though he were a one-man Chamber of Commerce. But he did tear himself away for an "unforgettable" tour of the Orient last year. ... And Ken Smith still follows the bar in New York, lives in Staten Island with one son (Ken III) and a beagle.
On more concrete matters, Pete Stamats is back out in Cedar Rapids, writing and publishing a new magazine called "Building Progress" which chronicles developments in industrial and institutional construction.... Howie Read is teaching at University of Pittsburgh graduate school of public health, but leaves in March to become administrator of Lawrence Hospital in Boston. . . .Al Streelman is still industrial relations manager for a Schenley distillery and also holds up the Cincinnati Junior Chamber of Commerce.... Parke Sickler (still in Chicago with Campbell Soup) writes that he's finally made it into the homeowning class. Parke and Bernie have daughters seven and three and are expecting again in May.
Wilmington, Del., is home and du Pont the boss for Dick Bergman and Dave Saxton. Dave's an application technologist on "Teflon" plastics, has a daughter (four) and son (two). Also with du Pont, Neal Crampton has recently moved to Charlotte, N. C., for work in the textile fiber sales division.
Al Schmidt is still savoring the around-the-world buying trip he made by jet last October. When not banging about in such places as London, Rome, and Hong Kong, for his knitwear import business, he lives happily with Joan and children (daughter, seven and son, seven months) at Deal, on the Jersey shore.
And elsewhere . . . well there are the Smith boys. . . . Justin (with two daughters) is sales manager and treasurer of Seymour Smith and Son, Inc. and K-S Marine Products Inc. in Woodbury, Conn. . . . Jack, with wife Joanie and son David, is assistant sales manager for New York Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee.
Pete Smart mentions that he's production manager of Tuttle & Bailey Pacific Inc. in La Puente, Calif., expects an heir in May.
... And that's about it.
