As promised in the last issue here is what Phil Marden said to John Cassin at the Matt Jones Fall Round-Up October 2:

TO John Cassin

On His Ninetieth Birthday, by '94.

John Cassin, late of Bar Mills, Maine, Resident now on Hanover Plain, Thee we salute, now and again.

Behold the blessings Heaven sends; Your ninetieth Natal Day impends, And here you sit, among your friends.

These friends have felt it rather smarty To throw this day a birthday party And score on Time a little starty.

The years on all have left their traces, White hair we have, and wrinkled faces - But still we feel like going places.

'Twon't be complete without some token Of words that must be left unspoken - Our hearts would otherwise be broken.

We've sent to you an easy chair, To which at evening you'll repair And read your paper lounging there.

Likewise I have this billet-doux, The which I now present to you - Which Billy Ames was meant to do.

And now, before I leave this garden, For this poor verse. I crave your pardon. Many returns! From me, P. Marden.

This, together with what Bill Cunningham wrote and what the secretary said to him touched John so deeply that he couldn't say a word, although he did get on his feet and tried to speak. Here is his "thank you" in writing:

My Dear Classmates '94:

How can I ever thank you for your wonderful gifts to your fellow classmate for his 90th Birthday!

You have overloaded me with kindness as proof of your friendship, to deserve which I shall always strive.

Thanking you from my heart,

In listing letters read at the Round-Up the name of Mrs. Harry Amey was accidentally omitted. The omission is regretted the more because Mrs. Amey has been so constant in such responses during the years.

Referring to the participation of the Class in this year's Alumni Fund it should be noticed that there is an increase of $152 over last year's, and that participation has gone up from 35 to 44. Indeed, we are now only 1% (338) behind 1900, which, thanks to Clarence McDavitt, has been for so long the banner Class in this respect. Thank you, Class Agent Kent Knowlton, for so successful a year. The generous participation of so many members of the Class family, in addition to the Class, is heartily appreciated.
