Any of you lads who have been interested in the likes of bosses Tweed, Hague, Curley, etc., and read the book, The Last Hurrah! will be pleased to know that we've got a healthy embryo in our midst. Stan "The Man"Zarod, who hasn't lost an election yet, has recently been elected president of the Springfield (Mass.) City Council. Stan has been a member of the Council for the past seven years and has been completely bitten by the politics "bug." In his job, he's served on all the major committees: Finance, Board of Supervisors, Claims, Traffic Commission, Juvenile Delinquency, etc. Well seasoned in the banquet tour, Stan still watches his weight like he did down at the Rood Club and still plays a bit of ball, getting his "share of base hits." Philosophizing casually on his ball playing, he remarked, "The older, the wiser, and the keener the batting eye." But I can't help but feel that that "batting eye" is being trained on knocking over some big state or federal office.
Our old football captain, Tommy Douglas, and his good wife Sue and the tribe of four are leaving Ohio for less green but more profitable pastures in Pittsburgh. Tom was recently promoted to the post of branch manager for Insulation Mfg. Corp. in the Pennsylvania territory and will maintain his office in the Smoky City.
We've been pretty much of a boomer in the '56 Alumni Fund, jockeying between first and second slot with '48. Amazing the number of guys who have got their contributions in already and the size of their giftsl Boog McLoud spent a weekend with u.s a fortnight ago and was so giddy about how well things were going he bet me his $10 against my $270 that Grace wouldn't marry the Prince after all, with proceeds to go to the Fund. As true love conquered, we're a couple of fins ahead.
In a more constructive field of finance, Claude Shuchter was elected Secretary of the United States Trust Company, and MalcolmSmith was elected Secretary of the General American Investors Co., Inc., both companies of New York.
A couple of months ago, I commented on the peculiar alphabetical address of Capt.Dud Wilson in his foreign assignment. He replied as follows:
"After your comment in the March ALUMNI MAGAZINE concerning the unlikeliness of my address, I sort of felt obliged to clear up any confusion regarding the scramble of letters above. Also the Colonel is touchy about such things. I am in the Headquarters of the Tactical Control Wing, Provisional, which is involved with the Aircraft Control and Warning setup in Continental Europe.
"My present job as Comptroller involves accounting, budget, and statistical matters for the entire organization ... also as a catch-all information center for all matters that have a dollar sign attached ... so am kept pretty busy.
"In the two years I've been over here, however, I have managed to get to France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Plan to leave next week for a run to Spain and Portugal. One more year and I'll be home."
That almost makes you want to brush up on your General Orders and M-I field stripping technique.
