A nice letter from Lymie Burgess (letterheadof Prentice-Hall Inc. 70- 5th Ave. but address,Tax Representative, North Granby Rd.,Granby, Conn.).
"Thank you for your kind letter. Things have been moving fast. Last Friday, as you mentioned, a jury gave me a $35,000 verdict on my accident. This Thursday the judge hearing the case set aside the verdict, holding it did not comply with the law, so out the window we go, and end up where we started, with nothing but all the expenses, and a period of maybe 4 or 5 yrs. more in the healing of the nerve system. So what to hell!"
What a man is Harvey Hood, for rendering service on so many worthwhile fronts! A Boston Herald item, "Harvey P. Hood, Pres., H.P. Hood & Sons, has been appointed a Class C Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston for a 3-yr. term as of Jan. 1." His service and devotion to Dartmouth is beautiful to see.
Like many '18ers, Lymie paid great tribute to Don Macauley, appointed to the State Superior Court. Adds Lymie:
"Because of demands on my time in going to law school, I have retired from most civic activities, except remaining as Justice of the Peace, and a member of the Republican Town Comm. This year will finish the 4th year of school, with the 5th and the last one next year, so that by Sept. 1957 hope to be a member of the Mass. Bar — then 1961 I'll be eligible to full retirement from Prentice Hall, and then I shall set up as a specializing tax lawyer with 20 to 25 yrs. of practice ahead."
We acclaim your courage, Lymie, and know you will win. Are you the same age as the rest of us? ... Too bad Mary Olive Jones lost her case in her auto accident in Washington.... Thanks to our BillCoulson, we are aware that one of Haggerty's Press releases, showing nominations to the Senate, had on it the name of Gene Markey, under the caption, "The following officers of the Retired Reserve of the USN, for permanent appointment to the grade of Rear Admiral, in the Retired Reserve, in the line of Staff Corps." Congratulations, Gene.... Margaret and DonScully were up to Hanover 60 days back. George Davis says, "Eddie Felt dropped in my office awhile back and was sorry I missed him. Pete Colwell hasn't been feeling too sharp in spots. I met him on the street the other day and with his white carnation he was beaming, but believe it or not he now wears a hat. Hates it like hell but the MD and Evey says he must, so he does."

Part of an editorial in Jim Langley's fine Concord Daily Monitor: "REJUVENATION maybe the honorary Life Membership conferred by the Concord, N.H., Jaycees upon the editor of the Monitor (James M.Langley) in recognition of his local and national civic activities during the past 30 years, will provide that degree of rejuvenation which a man needs when he gets beyond the 60-year mark. Whether it does or not, we feel greatly honored." We are proud of all of your accomplishments, Jim, and salute you for the many honors you have brought to the College and Class of '18.

Referring to our distinguished Quick-Lunch-Prof. Bab Fish (appointed by the Gov- ernor in 1947 as a member of the Arizona Power Authority), enjoyed tremendously by so many last fall at Hanover with Mildred, there was a very powerful editorial in the TucsonDaily Citizen in 1955, praising Bob for his "public interest which he has served so diligently, and to upholding the morals and the respect of private enterprise, in which he believes avidly." As Bob wrote in his widely read and much commented on column in the Tucson Daily Citizen, "Unless standards of fair conduct (in just such public-private dealings as this one) are established and maintained, the public interest is jeopardized and special types of private industry slide from enterprise to greed and then on to 'anything goes.'" .

A powerful paragraph from one who should know - our ranch man Bill Wright - on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce:
"I think Benson is one of the most courageous and expedient men in government. Obviously he is subject to attack by the opposition, who think they can win votes by deceiving people and agitating those who would fall for the bait of securing something for nothing. I still believe that free markets make free men. I do not want subsidy or any part of them, and above all, I do not want government trying to cure my business ills by political manipulation."
There is a man who breathes fresh air from the wide open spaces, and talks straight from the shoulder.
We have a fine picture of the Rev. Dr. GeorgeM.Davis Jr., who sent along such a nice thankful and appreciative note he received from the sister of our George M. Davis, who passed away back in 1918 - and George has been ever loyal to Minot's memory. He adds:
"Still about the same in New Rochelle. Trying to be an undertaker, spend all the taxpayers' gilt on the School Board, and doing three services every Sunday in church while running the kindergarten through the 6th grade Junior Congregation. Having a swell time, but would rather it was a little parish somewhere up near the Hanover Plain."

Roberts exhibit now being displayed in the Baker Library, a Hanover newspaper says, "Eric T. Outstanding in her work is Spud Richmond's wife, Janet, who is chairman of more than 6000 Nassau Long Island volunteers of the American Red Cross.
