Willie Ard's latest novel, .38 is a corker. His gumshoe, Timothy Dane, takes on the Syndicate this time. Nimbly battling boudoirs and bullets, Timothy does a workmanlike job in bringing his quarry to bay. It's marvelous reading and you'll get a kick out of recognizing some of the underworld characters like Marty Shea and Swampy Marsh. .38 should make an interesting Yule gift for your maiden aunt.
And for your Christmas list, you'll want to consider the new Dartmouth watercolor prints painted by Volney Croswell. These prints were reproduced in France in fourteen colors. Only a limited supply of 500 sets were prepared: they are available at Campion's. Excellent work! Undoubtedly there will be an ad in this MAGAZINE illustrating the six scenes Volney has selected.
Andy "Honker" Carstenson blew into town last night, and over a few knocks, he told me that Buffy Crawford Hills has hung up his banker's spats and bought out a printing business doing specialized silk screen work. Here's the place to go for some fancy lottery tickets. Ted Mortimer, also up in Cleveland, is assistant pediatrician at the City Hospital. His boss, Dr. Robins, is one of the three recipients of the Nobel Prize for isolating the polio virus. The Mortimers had a new little son recently. The Honker also mentioned that Jack Marlette strolled into town for the Series, and that Chuck Longfield has just built a new manor up there. Earl Flood, another Clevelander, had a serious auto accident on the Turnpike last summer and was hospitalized for a considerable time. He's now up and about again and apparently fully recovered.
Teeny Riggs has been named vice president and director of the Oklahoma Log Exchange in Oklahoma City. I'm sure I can't imagine what a "log exchange" is, but it must be quite a deal for the Teen to give up his good job with Carter Oil in Tulsa. The Brattleboro Dartmouth Club's new president is the good dentist, Dr. Eric Barradale. Harry Carey was chairman of the Weymouth, Mass., Red Feather Fund this year and had to meet a quota increase of almost 10%. Harry is with the National Shawmut Bank in Boston and is also active in the National Guard. The part-time field artillery captain spent fifteen days at Ft. Drum this fall. And with the Army, Capt. Frank Murphy and his wife Virginia recently found themselves in Tokyo for a tour of duty in the Tokyo Army Hospital. Frank's a psychiatrist.
In the recent elections, we had two lads on the ballots. Both Democrats... so we might assume they made it. The old campaigner Stan Zarod was out for a seat in the Massachusetts House. A Springfield Councilman, Stan put on quite a program in letting the good citizens of Wards 2 and 8 know why they should have Solid Stan representing them at the State Capitol. In a "Let the record speak for itself" mood, Stan gave them eight good reasons why ... it's quite a record, too. (But I'll still vote for McKinley.) Then down in Westport, Conn., Steve Tate got the Democratic nomination as candidate for the General Assembly. Hope I can get the results of these two contests for the next issue.
The 01' stork stopped by at the Bill Portman's October 16 and left an outstanding little lad, William Claudius Portman III. Within a week, he was enrolled in the Class of '75. Then the big bird took off for Berkeley, Calif., to bring the Vern Genns a baby daughter on October 30.
In the matrimonial department, Ed Bailey and pretty Frances Crary Williams of San Francisco announced their engagement. JohnEaton, solidifying his position, has accepted chairmanship of the Westchester Bachelors' Cotillion Christmas dance.
Hope you've all sent Bill McElnea your class dues. Again many thanks for the fine job in the 1954 Alumni Fund ... and have a marvelous Christmas.
