Men of Dartmouth of Southern California came together December 13 for a big Christmas cocktail party honoring our own EckHiestand '10, newly elected Republican Congressman from California's 21st District.
The turnout was one of biggest in the Association's history. Nearly 200 Hiestand admirers jammed the Huntington Hotel's newly completed Green Room, which made hotel's Wes Hadden '41 squirm, thinking of a premature re-decoration bill.
This event, which ran from 4 to 6 P.M., officially, saw many Dartmouth men hanging about until the we sma' hours. A number of new faces were in evidence. Harry Colmery '46 is just back from a stint in Korea, and still trying to make up his mind about California weather. He may return to the Midwest. Marty Ullman '48 and Prexy Frank Danzig hovered near the hors d'oeuvre table all night long.
Portraits of Eck were all over the place. There was some talk about flying one of the four-foot monsters from the Huntington flagpole. but Chuck Robinson '31 refused to climb up.
Highlight of the evening came when the bartender dropped a drink. Nobody could move in the crammed room, so the glass never reached the floor; simply wedged" between legs of Bill Hawkins '30 and LawrenceBrooks '23. Bill Keyes '29 spent the rest of the evening trying to pick it up. Finally got it when the crowd thinned.
A great vote of thanks is due Bob Purvis '49 for his conscientious patrol of the door, collecting money and keeping the place clear of many unsavory characters.
The success of this party brought a lot of urging for more frequent get-togethers of this nature, especially at Christmas time. Plans are being made for a large-scale Christmas party annually, with other gatherings at different times of the year also probable.
The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Southern California extends a warm welcome to newcomers Harold Blanchard '27, C. Edward Zeller '42, and Lowell A. Brown '47.
The next big get-gether will probably be a luncheon sometime in March, honoring the great Dartmouth alumnus, Beardsley Ruml '15.
