Back in the States at last, after being too long away and too divorced from what is familiar. The trip to the Med was both interesting and educational. In fact, all the other adjectives used to describe "The Grand Tour" would apply here, but I'll be just as usual enough to say that the U.S.A. has it over every place I've been so far.
As is customary, this issue of the MAGAZINE is devoted in the main to the Fund reports, so per custom this edition of the column will be a little shorter than usual, if that is possible. Now, on with the news.
The Overall Picture
I am about to quote in its entirety a note I received regarding Bruce Knight which I believe rates congrats. It reads as follows:
"In the September issue of the AmericanJournal of Physics appears a seven-page article by Bruce W. Knight Jr. '52. Its title is CanonicalField Theory A Prototype Example, and the footnote to it reads, 'This paper is based upon a senior paper submitted to the Department or Physics, Dartmouth College.' Bruce, more familiarly known as Tucker, had submitted a term paper entitled Canonical and the Vibrating String for Physics 102. It contained an original approach to an old problem. Tucker was advised to revise the paper and submit it to the editor of the foregoing Journal. By the end of the summer of 1952 HE had completed the revision, in consultation with professor King, and had submitted it for publication. was accepted with commendation and scheduled to appear in the September 1953 issue. Tucker is now studying for his doctorate at Cornell University. During the summer of 1953 he was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission for research work at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island."
Hitting the high spots on '52 activities as of the moment, I note that Pfc. Pete Burnside is again making news in baseball circles. He was one of the mainstays on Fort Wood "Hill-toppers" last summer and as of July 30 he had allowed only eight runs in 39 innings with a 4-0 record and an earned run average of 1.84. As most of you know, he broke into organized baseball back in 1949 with St. Cloud, Minn., Northern League and spent the 1950 season with Knoxville Tenn., and the 1951 season with the Tri-State League. Pete has been in the Army since shortly after graduation.
Pvt. Johnny Fancher Jr. is serving in Korea with the Korean Base section. He is a preventative medical clerk and entered the service shortly after graduation. Pfc. "Wild Bill"Breed is also over in that area with the 2nd Infantry Division. Unless I have my facts wrong, they will be due for rotation sometime next spring.
Dick Dalbeck now has Ens. USNR after his name and is at Bayonne N. J., learning the finer points of the Navy Supply Corps. In Newport last September Fred Neumann was among the 180 students who were commissioned. He also is at Bayonne . Another recently commissioned officer is Albie Collins, now with 2nd Lt. USAF after his John Hancock. George Storck was recently promoted to cadet sergeant at West Point. Recently graduated from O.C.S. at Fort Benning as a 2nd Lt. is George Read. He took his basic at Fort Knox before entering Infantry Officer Candidate School.
The Matrimonial Picture
I'm not sure that I will be able to cover the whole field this time because of the space limitation, but here goes with a rundown on the recently engaged. One Danforth A. Hall and Winifred Loye announced their engagement late August. Dan received his Master's from Tuck last June. His bride-to-be is an honor student at Mt. Holyoke and is spending her junior year studying at St. Andrews College and University in Scotland. On September 5 Jack Van Baalen and Lynn Potamkin announced their engagement in Elkins Park. Jack is at the Law School at the University of Pennsylvania and his fiance was graduated from Bryn Mawr. Also from that same area comes news of Jack Arnt's engagement to Stephanie Fuguet . Jack is with the Navy in Washington and Stephanie graduated from Briarcliff with the Class of '53. Ed Smuckler and. Judith Becker were affianced last September. Judy is a Mt. Holyoke graduate and Ed is at the Tufts College Med School. DaveSunderland and Barbara Hoyt of East Norwalk were engaged on October 10. Barbara is a Wheaton College graduate and Dave is stationed in Newport. On the same day Dave Neiditz and Minerva Heller were engaged. She is a Smith senior and Sophia Smith Scholar and Dave is a second year law student at Harvard. On the 18th of October JohnnyUpton and Penelope Perkins announced their engagement. Johnny's bride-to-be is teaching school at present and is a graduate of Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass.
Concerning the weddings back on August 18, Anne Hawkins became the bride of Joe Stampfer in Bronxville, N. Y. They make their home in Albuquerque, N. M. Ten days later in Newtown, Conn., Jim Harshbrager and Jean Hubbard became husband and wife. They make their home in Philadelphia. Jean graduated from Green Mountain and Jim, having graduated from the Med School, is continuing his medical studies at the University of Pennsylvania Med school. Here's one I missed. Herb Drury and Maryanne Ankuda were married last March in Ticonderoga Maryanne is a graduate of Lasell Junior College and she and Herb are living in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he is doing graduate work in geography.
Enough for this month save for one item which came as quite a shock to me upon my return from Europe. On October 16 CharlieFisher lost his life as a result of the explosion on the Leyte. His family and widow can be reached at 932 Boynton Ave., New York 59, N. Y.
To you all, Happy Holidays. See you NextYear! !
