Let's start oft with a couple of sincere apologies. If there's anything a guy hates to see in print it's his name spelled wrong. And it's especially irritating when his name is spelled wrong in a place like the ALUMNI MAGAZINE where a guy ought to know how to spell everybody's name. In the last issue it happens not once but twice. There's a, guy we know name of Sax Ziemen. Everytime he lands in print there's an "A" in it. Some Gremlin in this old Royal must have an affinity for "A." Another guy we know name of Bill Mathers. He gets an "R" dropped all the time. Seems there are some other Dartmouth guys in other classes name of Mathes—no "R." But that s no excuse. So again—we're damned sorry and we'll watch those "A's" and "R's." Incidentally, there's no "H" in a guy's name—Bankart. Just thought we'd "mention it.
Way back in January a very conscientious wife took the time to send us some news. The postoffice got a little confused and returned the letter even though it was correctly addressed. So the conscientious wife, growing even more-so, took another crack at it in March. Postoffice decided it was time to deliver come rain or snow, hell or highwater, and here it is:
"Just a word to let you know we have another son, Hugh Marchmont-Robinson, born December 22, 1951. This makes our third; Scott, born March 18, 1945, and Guy, born October 6, 1948, making the other two. Seems like every three years history repeats itself. Robby just never seems to find time to write. He's quite busy being Executive Editor or The Family "Physician, a monthly put out by the Illinois Academy of General Practise of which he was president last year. No more news, but with Rob being connected with a magazine I realize how difficult it is to get news from people—plus the tact, of course, we are happy to make our announcement. Norma Marchmont-Robinson."
And we are happy to receive it. Thank you, Norma, for the news and for your persistence. Guy we know name of Tom Lane. Came to New York from California two years ago and took a job as Vice-President of McCann-Erickson Advertising. This past March Tom was elected a director and assumed new duties as a senior service division manager reporting to the president.
Here's a guy name of Bill Bury who's just been appointed manager of all IBM sales and services in the Norfolk, Va., area. Before that he was a special representative in Baltimore. Bill joined the company in 1940 in New York as a member of the staff at the New York World's Fair and later served in various capacities in Dayton, Atlanta, Columbus, Akron and Washington. Some guys we know get around.
Back in February there was a College-Industry Conference sponsored by the American Society for Engineering Education and M.I.T. Fellow name of Hank Muller gave a talk on "The Engineer as an Individual in Industry." He was one of three speakers at the morning session of the one-day affair. Reason for Hank's being there—he's assistant to the vicepresident in charge of engineering at Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
Recent primary in New Hampshire which stimulated national interest involved a fellow you know and his family. He's Dick Upton, a lawyer, a politician and an active campaigner \for Eisenhower. His brother Fred, a law partner in the family firm, was campaigning for Taft. Their father, vice-chairman of the state Republican committee and prominently mentioned for governor, was uncommitted and refused to tell even his family how he stood. Seems many a long debate went on for many a long evening in the Upton household and you all know who won—fellow we know.
Here's a squib from Hy Gardner's "Coast to Coast" column: "A group of second-generation Hollywoodites at MGM have organized their own production company. Call it Sons of the Pioneers.' Directors include Arthur Loew Tr., Sidney Franklin Jr., and MauriceRapf."
Had a class dinner in New York in March. Aside from the old stalwarts we had two new faces. Charlie Brown, who has just been returned to the United States from Bonn, Germany, by Newsweek. He'll continue working in the Overseas Division but will be desked in New York. Also Tom Bledsoe, who was wearing a Naval Officer's uniform. Seems Tom is in the active reserve and just recently completed a two-weeks' tour of duty on a carrier in the Atlantic. On this particular night he was due to go to some meeting-or-other and, as X recall, he didn't make it. Tom is managing editor of the College Department of Rinehart & Cos., Publishers.
Personal Contact Department: Ran into Dero Saunders at dinner the other night. While still working for the editorial department of Fortune Magazine he has found time to put out a book. As soon as it's on the market we'll give a report. A phone call from DickHalvorsen, in which he reports that he is now working with a couple of other guys on a TV package deal based on the mystery steries he has been creating for these many years. A lunch date witfi Frank Cornwell, who was in New York on a business trip from St. Louis for Brown Shoe Cos. Frank heads up the Buster Brown Division and is actively trying to persuade independent shoe dealers around the country to stock the line. Keeps him busy traveling. Another lunch date the next day with Ed Offutt, who is right now building fires under our current Alumni Fund Drive. If the rest of us could accept the challenge of financial support for the College with the energy, enthusiasm and devotion that Ed does, there would never be any problem of making our quota.
We are greatly saddened to report the deaths o£ three classmates, word of which has been received during this past month. Chester Edwards died suddenly in Stoughton, Mass., last November. Bart Anderson died after a period of illness in Saginaw, Mich., on December 28. Forrest Bunker, who had been hospitalized for a long time in Toronto, passed away on March 9. We are trying to get further word on each of these men so that a full necrology can be prepared for the next issue. Will appreciate any information anyone can send.
That covers all the fellows we know for another month. So, until May, remember the Fund.
