I have a nice big picture right in front of me of Steve Bradley demonstrating his snowpacking machine out in Winter Park, Colo. Any of you old "Chubbers" who used to turn out to pack the jump and the slalom course on Oak Hill are now excused from further work. Steve, who is in charge of the Winter Park area, says it can do the work of ten men. Constructed on a steel frame, the packer has a large wheel about eight feet wide that rotates during the downhill trek packing the snow as it turns.
In front of the wheel is an adjustable blade that can level the course. The operator skis in a harnesslike arrangement in front of the frame, guiding it down the mountain. Steve is manufacturing these units in Boulder, and they are available for sale to other ski areas.
A note from Hank Conkle in Delray Beach, Fla., came today in the midst of the rain and sleet of a New England March. The February Redbook Magazine carried a fascinating story about Dot and Hank and their Carolina Mountain Shop, entitled, "This is the Life." The summer in Cashiers, N. C., with Florida in the winter, easily explains the title.. At the top of the Blue Ridge, in a handcraft and summer resort center, the Conkles' original gift shop, opened after the war, has now grown to the proportions of a general store. You may have seen their ads in House andGarden or the catalog they put out. Dartmouth visitors can usually find a free green handwoven tie waiting for them. Sure wish my wife hadn't seen that business about having a cottage on the beach.
Jack Treadway has moved up from manager of the Williams Inn to managing director of the 12 Treadway Inns. My spies tell me that if you have any green stuff left after March 15 and have the urge to join the Conkles in the South, the Treadway establishment in Vero Beach has a real special deal for you and ma of $17.00 per 24 hours, between March 25 and April 15.
A recent press release from the ChicagoTribune brings word about a man we've had no news about in some time; "Employers Mutual Insurance Companies of Wausau, Wis. announced the promotion of Robert S.Hagge to executive vice president." Bob was previously director of research.
A swell note from Jim Donovan brings us up to date:
"I've been on duty in Hawaii since last September, working with CincPac Evaluation Group, we are trying to compile the lessons learned from Naval and Marine operations in the Korean War. It's very interesting work and has involved visits to the operating forces in the Far East. I've run into a few Dartmouth men at the Honolulu Dartmouth Club. Wife Kay, daughter Kathy and I have enjoyed life in Hawaii particularly when reading of the rugged weather back East this winter."
Some of the Gang have done some moving. Ben Ayers, petroleum engineer for Stanolind Oil and Gas Co., has been transferred to the division office in Houston. Colby Howe has been appointed manager of Bolt and Nut Sales for the Bethlehem Steel Co. He will maintain his offices at the general offices in San Francisco.

Jack Vincens and his agents are now well along with their plans to help you part with some dough for the Alumni Fund. Their contribution of time and effort is never fully appreciated unless you have performed the task yourself. It can be made much easier if you come across early, rather than late, and save the follow-ups on their part.
