This is my last column of my second year in this business, so I hope you have borne with me, and I'll promise to try to do better in the future. Of course, my activity depends directly on your cooperation, so make a mental note to pitch in next year and help. I'll stuff this column with as much as they'll take, because the news would become stale by fall.
Before I get into my own news, I again want to remind you of the great job the Fund is doing. The most recent "Little Green Derby" results show our class LEADING. We should be very proud of the record, and we should all want to remain at the top by doing our share. Help the college through the Fund Drive!!
By the time you read this our Boston and Hanover '49 get-togethers will be over and will have been, I hope, a success. Our third proposed luncheon is for New York on Saturday, June 16, at the familiar Dartmouth Club. This has been arranged by Johnny Adler, who deserves all credit, and the class treasury will bear some of the expense, as per our generous treasurer, Dave Vogels, who's a fly-boy instructor down at Randolph Field, Tex. Cards will be sent to all of you within 4.0 miles of N.Y.C. so expect them, and plan to attend. RankLashmet, my Chicago agent, writes that he's formulating plans for a similar Chicago gettogether, so you in that area may be able to help. His address again is 887 Sheridan Rd., Glencoe.

Clipping from Great Neck, L. 1., reports that Ort Hicks, a resident of that town, spoke to the annual meeting of the G. N. Council of Girl Scouts on his recent trip to Norway. Ort went as "ambassador" from Great Neck. He's at present in the advertising business. .. . Bill McCabe has been placed by the State Mutual Life Assurance Cos. (one of the outfits I too work for) into their Cincinnati office. . . . From the Houston (Tex.) Press comes one of a series of articles written for them by Pvt.Ray Powers called "Diary of a New Draftee" (at Camp Hood, Tex.). Ray writes with a great deal of humor, spurred by sarcasm. . .. R.C.A. Victor writes that Rank Lashmet has recently been promoted to Sales Supervisor of the Home Instrument Dept. He's assistant to the sales manager in supervising the sales of RCA Victor radios, TV, and phonographs. Rank's sure moving up fast. He writes that he loves everything connected with the job and company.
Dean Worth is the recipient of a James B. Reynolds Scholarship of $2000 for foreign study next year. He holds a similar scholarship presently, but this second grant will be used to further his study of Russian civilization and Soviet affairs at the Slavic Institute of the Univ. of Paris. . . .Thayer M.{Pete) Ktngsley is going with the advertising Dept. of the Diamond Match Co.. . . Now into the vast numbe of letters I've continued to receive. I'm sure appreciative of all these and hope they'll continue. Ex roomie Bill Ballard writes from TV life in N.Y.C., that all goes well with him and wife Naomi. He also located ArtWallace's presence for me (at Camp Gordan, Ga., in Signal work for Uncle Sam). ... . Marv Darning wrote from Italy where he was vacationing from Balliol College of Oxford. Marv sees a little of both Rog Sheldon and Dave Bergamini at other schools of Oxford. He says Rog and he (Marv) are worrying about service call. He also says Dave recently won first prize in a poetry contest for a sonnet he wrote, "the name of which I cannot remember as I'm presently too full of Florence Chianti.". . . From Jack Flanagan, Beta, of Los Angeles comes report of his recent illness with ulcers. Jack was bedridden for six weeks. He and wife Molly parented Katherine T. Flanagan Sept. 24. Jack works for Tile-Tex Division of the Flintkote Co. dealing in L.A. in Asphalt Floor Tile. He said he talked by long-distance phone to many '49s who attended the ProomHarper wedding last fall and that all reported it a delightful affair. Jack also got orders to report back to Uncle Sam, but his illness cancelled the orders. . . . Rocket Reed wrote from Boston of his engagement (above) and his recent return from Europe on a business trip through six countries, on which he stayed near Russ Hemenway and wife in Paris for four days. Russ is with the Security Investigating Division of the E.C.A. Rocket's inactive reserve and hopes to remain just that. . . . He is Vice President of the Rayona Corporation and wool-buyer and seller for the Robert G. Reed Co. In both jobs he often contacts Summy Arneson, another wool man up in Beantown.
Postcard from Florida from Tom Swartz where he was Easter-vacationing with his parents. Tom is the one who's made all the arrangements for the Hanover luncheon May 19. . . Card from Jack McCurdy out in Colorado Springs where he's working for the local newspaper as ad-man and news writer. . . . Marine Sgt. Zeke Thurloiv writes from Camp Lejeune, N. C., where he and wife Carolyn recently received a small bundle of joy now named Lynn Scott Thurlow. Zeke's not sure what his next address will be although he's applied for O.C.S. at Quantico.

Letter in today's mail from Jim Sullivan down in Wilmington, Del. where he's a designer (concrete, steel, architectural, etc.) for DuPont. He's at present living at the Wilmington "Y" but awaits his wife's arrival in June before settling down. News of Berf Oakley is that he works with A. C. Nielsen in N. Y., and of Gil Nelson is that he's with J. G. Grimes in Baltimore. Bill Mackey reports that SamKilner and Dana "Deke" Jackson recently made a four-week tour of the East, made Carnival, and ran into Bob Hill, Carter Hoyt and Dick Higley. He says Jim Krentler is in the insurance business in Denver. Jackson, Kilner and Krentler are all enlisted in the Navy Air Corps and await their respective calls. Dick O'Riley was expecting Uncle Sam's beckon back in February, so he may be in now. EdWashburn is still in med. school. . . . Bob Goetz, who's working for a masters in Biology, sees RalphBurgard and Dick Miller up in Buffalo occasionally. He also saw Dick Higley, Tom Swartz, and CarterHoyt at the Cornell game last fall.. .. Lou Harris is deep in Stanford Law School. . . . Wayne Whittemore is all tied up in preparation for some insurance underwriting exams down in Brooklyn, and the only '49's he's seen in 21 months in N.Y.C. are Bob Castle and Dale Jacobson.
Jim Huntington works in his dad's insurance agency in New Rochelle. At a recent Westchester County "D" Club smoker he ran into FrenchyBlanc and Fred Briscoe. .. . Ort Hicks writes of his much activity with Compton Adv. Agency which keeps him on the constant go. He hopes to visit this summer with new brother-in-law Spike Smith. , . .Punchy Thomas writes that Columbia Law School has him really working with little time for social life. He did see Pvt. John Mcllwraith who flew into N.Y. for a three-day leave from Fort Knox and the two with Johnny Gallup spent a jubiliant Eve together. He's also seen Mark Lansburgh on the shuttle. Mark does free lance photography work.
Rank Lashmet writes that when the Dartmouth Glee Club hit Chicago he saw CalTitus, Bill Knight and Jim Smith there. Titus and wife are "expecting" this month. He's selling classified ads to auto agencies for the Chicago Tribune. Bill's at Northwestern Law (2nd Year). Smitty is making contract sales around the territory as well as St. Louis for American Hospital Supply. He and wife have a dachsund pup which Rank says they keep referring to as "their young one." Rank's wedding is scheduled for June 29 and BudHughes is to be best man with Frank Stowell as an usher. Rank, on a recent trip East, saw Bill Meh lon and wife in Philly.
