Gad! Thirty days this year is really a short term, shorter even than 30 days last year. Seems as though I just barely finished writing the last set of these notes. There's a lot of news here, though, so maybe this time I'll be able to fill a few inches about '48 in Charlie Widmayer's clipsheet. This is probably the last time yours truly will be writing in this space, at least for a couple of years, so it's great to have something to say in my remaining feeble attempts.
Good Old Abe Abrahamson took the trouble to write a good letter about the recent alumni dinner held in New York. The '48s at this annual affair, beside Abe, were John Alden, Dick Dahl, Walt Henry, GeneFinke, Milt Kurlzt Joe Smith, Johnnie VanRaalte, Walt Wood, Bill Malone, Joe Marple,Ted Finkelday and near-Dr. Bob Hoekelman. Guess Abe's list left out someone, for, according to Fink, King Alcohol was also present, but it was hard to pick out the year of his class affiliation. Some of the fellows felt that this particular guest's matriculation couldn't have been over six months ago, though. Joe Marple has a job in television down south this summer where he will be in the production end of things. Judging by most current T-V productions, Joe, you're going to have a hard time holding your end up. Good luck! And Abe is going to take the first of a series of exams for a CPCU designation (?) in June, so he has a job ahead of him, too.
From my bird's-eye position astride the aisle, I see that the matrimonial side of life has not escaped the attention of some of our more ambitious classmates. Some of the details are lacking, but here's what there is. On April 22, Dave Kadyk married Phyllis Ann Keenan of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Sorry we don't have any of the vital statistics about the bride, but Dave is finishing up his last year at Michigan Law School at Ann Arbor. He's making out very well, too. Don Hansen is planning to follow along the matrimonial highroad at some time in the near future, apparently, for he has just become engaged to Marian F. Sheridan of his home town, Maynard, Mass. Marian is a graduate of Bentley School. Congratulations to both men, and to the ladies.
Herb Shulman and his wife Barbara were at the Inn the middle of April. They are living in Brookline, Mass., and were in Hanover for a short vacation. On the 18th and 19th, TomMatthews and his new bride Virginia stopped in. They were apparently on their honeymoon. Their new home is in Bethlehem, Conn.
Bob Blun is now in Charlottesville, Va., having worked his way north from Florida. He's an engineer clerk, and should be addressed in care of the Fish Constructors, Inc. What will you engineers think of next, Bob? Bob Sherman is now a casualty insurance underwriter with The Travelers in N.Y.C. Lieutenant Dave Richards has been trans- ferred from Bainbridge and is now stationed down at Newport, R. I. Mike Shea, who graduated in February, is also in insurance, but he's located over in Montpelier, Vt. JackParker is a banker. He's with the Provident Institution for Savings in Boston. If you've got any spare simoleons lying around, he'll take care of them for you. And don't forget to send one—yes, even one—to the Alumni Fund.
Looking through an address list here, I notice that a few of you guys are located west of the Mississippi. Actually, most of '48s live in the Boston, New York, and Chicago areas, while those beyond the Father of Waters are really scattered. Bill Fitzpatrick is selling soap for Procter and Gamble in Dallas. Dave Loye is in Oklahoma City; JackMcFalls and Don Graham are in Seattle; Hynes Miller is in Roswell, N. M.; JohnnieMurphy and Hugh Shearer are in Pasadena and Santa Cruz, Calif., respectively; DonCasey and Dave Culp in Denver; Jay Rutledge is in Oakland, Calif.; and Charlie Zoolalian in Hollywood. Don Smith is in San Francisco; Len Robinson in Houston: HuckNewberry in Fort Worth; Don Funk in Caldwell, Idaho; Mel Cheesman in Sumner, Wash.; and Mac Macartney in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Loye, Miller, and Funk are the only men listed in their respective states, while Mac is the only '48 in Canada, so far as I know. This isn't by any means the full list of westerners, but it may give some of you an idea of where your old friends are. How about a word from you guys on what you're doing out there in the West?
An informer of the fair sex tells me that Ray Richard has just about completed his G.E- training program and has been transferred to Schenectady. He'll soon be a member of the production staff there. Maybe he'll run into Dave Auld, who is also working for G.E. in the same area. Got a letter from Beech "The Bottle" Lockwood in which he says, in part, "Be sure to say hello to all the boys for me up there, and give the old '48s a kick in the butt. I got a letter from John Lanzetta the other day, and he said he would be up there for Green Key, so watch out for your old hair!" Brings back to mind the vivid pic- ture of John with his scissors, shoe polish and Aqua Velva in initiating the '49s back in 1944. By the way, John, who won the pot of money? Just met Walt Newman down the road a few minutes ago. After graduation, he spent a year in New York City in real estate, didn't like it, so is now back in Hanover and is working for the Buildings and Grounds Dept. while he waits for next fall, at which time he will be entering New York Medical College at Flower and Fifth Avenue. Walt says his stay in Hanover is getting him into physical shape for the coming grind, he hopes. One of his med classmates at Flower will be his '48 classmate, Harry Wood.
Hate to relate this, but we sure aren't holding our place in the Alumni Fund Drive very well. Some of you fellows have really gone all out, but you're carrying, I'm sorry to say, just about the whole load. If Dartmouth ever did anything for you holdouts, how about dropping a buck in the mail for old times' sake, if for nothing more?
