Writing notes almost a month ahead during the football season is a despairing task, since I shall be seeing some of you in Cambridge in a couple of weeks and others possibly outside Portal L in New Haven, should I get down there and should you stray from the Gloomy Interior outside, as was not the case (in the second instance) last year. Instead, then, of trying to make the November notes contemporaneous and full of chit-chat,. I shall merely cover the major items of in terest which have been accumulating since last spring.

"Meriden Doctor, Born Here, Saves Sight of Patient by New Method," screams the Fall River (Mass.) Herald-News of last May. "Spinal fluid introduced into the eye of a patient doomed to blindness has restored the sight of a Connecticut man in a delicate operation performed by a 33-year-old former Fall River resident, now a physician in that State. The comparatively new technique was used by Dr. Winthrop I. Clarke of Meriden. Conn...." "Married and the father of two children, Dr. Clarke graduated from Dartmouth College, served at Dibble General Hospital in California with the U. S. Army in World War II, following his graduation from Harvard Medical School. He interned at Meriden Hospital for one year and specialized at New Haven General Hospital."

"J. Clark Barrett, in charge of multiple unit sales for McCormick & Company, Inc., has recently been elected to the Board of Directors. Mr. Barrett joined McCormick & Company, largest spice and extract house in the world (advt.), in 1938 as a salesman. He was assigned to the Cincinnati territory and remained in that area until entering the U. S. Navy.

"Graduating from Navy flying school in November, 1941, Mr. Barrett was commissioned an Ensign and assigned to the air craft carrier U.S.S. Hornet. He later served aboard the carrier U.S.S, Natoma Bay. For his extensive service in the Pacific as the pilot of a dive bomber, Mr. Barrett was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal."

Again on the business front: "Appointment of Davicl L. Berliner as a junior executive of the Mack Shirt Corp. was announced He formerly was associated with the Edwin E. Berliner Co., New York textile converters."

"Dear John (Oh welcome phrase!): I want to pass along to you an announcement of the birth of my first young one, Barbara Helene (Harries). The former Emilie Kulbe of Haledon, N. J. and I were married October, 1947 and we are happy to have this future exploiter of Dartmouth College.

"I have never noticed (in the column—ed.) that any of our classmates are active in the textile chemical and dyes tuff business. That is my field and I am very well situated with Sandoz Chemical Works Inc. and am busy in the New York metropolitan area.

"In addition to the above, you may be pleased to get the following information. Alex Jones and wife were reported to have had a son about the middle of July—l have not heard from Alex about this. H. Thomas Richmond very happily informed me that he is soon going to add to his family."—Herb Harries.

Among the other social and natal events, include the birth on 30 Aug. 49 of an unnamed girl, 7 lbs., 19 inches (height), girthimpressive, to Stan and Nena Brown in the Gorgas Hospital, Canal Zone. Brown states "I am shocked to report that there is a disturbing resemblance between the child and myself. That means years of hopeful watching and waiting for signs of a change."

Although not an avid reader of Society Sections, except the local sheet, I beg to report the following marriages: DuVal Cravens of Buffalo, N. Y. to Mildred Annete McGuire of the same city, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College; and Eugene Sauve Waggaman Jr. and Miss Nancy Quinn of New York, JohnFitting Jr. of Dartmouth being best man. About to be married: Mr. Richard GoldenChase of New York and Miss Edith Marie Gates of Minneapolis, Minn.; "both Miss Gates and Mr. Chase are research chemists with Merck & Co. in Rahway, N. J."

From the Boston 1938 News Bureau (BillGanter, who is still having his physical troubles, poor guy!): Jim Miller has changed jobs as of July 1 and is now "controller" for Modern Hygiene Corp., who are distributors of vacuum cleaners. Rumor hath it that Rollie Jones has been transferred to Chicago by Lewis-Shepherd Co. of Watertown, Mass. DaveFreeman is with the Greater Boston Community Council which just merged with the Community Fund in an effort to simplify assistance to charities. Very hush-hush! MacNutt, the cotton broker, has picked up another account,—the export business of Star Ale (it is class policy to encourage members to go into the brewing and distilling business). Bill Main is in England touring with "Death of a Salesman." Stearns Mac Nutt has another boy—now three boys and one girl, and very much in the running for Class honors (Cf. Oct. notes).

From far-off California comes news that Larry Sy.mm.es is the proud contemplator and changer of one baby daughter yclept Marilyn.

Rather than cram this column full with other items I have gleaned at cost of great personal exertion (opening mail), I shall hope that the long list of address changes from the summer will appear to complete the record. Just one more, and this time a crushing honor, for 1938—Don Guy won a new rod (Ace Berrylium Copper Surf Rod, custom Perez Reel and spool of Golden Dot Line) in the Martha's Vineyard bass fishing tourney for the Fourth Estate (Guy is with AP) by landing or beaching a 22½ pounder.

Recent guests chez Hanover Inn: Fred Hollingsworth of Elgin, Ill.; Thomas C. Roberts of Worcester, Mass.; Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Matteson of Center Moriches, N. Y.; M. E. Gondit of Center Sandwich, N. H.
