Matt Jones Fall Round-up, October 21, on the eve of the Dartmouth-Harvard game. BudLyon is making the arrangements, and these will be announced in due time. Let 110 one think that because we were together in June there is any particular reason for our not getting together again in October. Put it down in your engagement book now.
Apologies are due Paul Jenks for omitting from the "Roll Call" at the 55th the fact that he has a wife. Strange that this would be done in the case of Paul, whose better-half has been so great a tower of strength to him, especially in recent years.
Apologies are also due to Woody Parker for omitting his name from the list of men in the class picture as published in the July MAGAZINE. Not everybody could be expected to know that of course the Class Agent would be in the class picture.
Wedding bells: "Mr. and Mrs. John Leroy Mann announce the marriage of their daughter Mary to Mr. Paul Ellwood MacCready on Thursday, the eighteenth of August, Nineteen hundred and forty-nine, Saint Philips In The Hills, Tucson, Arizona. At Home, 2826 East Copper, Tucson, Arizona.
It is a fair guess that among those who couldn't come to the 55th few were sorrier about it than Billy Wallis. However, we have good news from him:
"But the skill and knowledge of physicians, coupled with the administrations of penicillin, sulfa drugs, transfusions, and what have you, have put me on my feet again. And I'm better than for several months. Too bad my illness couldn't have come earlier or later so I could have attended the 55th. Perhaps I'll be in on the 60th."
Another very regrettable absence was that ofEddie Grover, also kept away by health reasons. However, the following citation whichwas read to him by President Hamilton Holtof Rollins College in June is certainly a strongvitamin and we hope will help to bring Eddieto our 60th:
"Edwin Osgood Grover, I shall never forget that critical faculty meeting during our first days at Rollins when I proposed that we adopt the two-hour conference plan as a method of instruction. The issue hung in the balance until you arose, as the first and only Professor of Books in existence, and said, 'Let's try it.' That carried the day. You are the type of man who never rests on your oars. Wherever you go things improve. When you take a new classroom you put pictures on the wall. I have been in some classrooms in Rollins when a professor lets a picture hang sideways the whole year. You have helped many a student through college, especially those .who have the promise of creative literary ability. You have forgotten more about good typography than most of us ever knew. And last, but by no means least, your creation and upkeep against almost unbelievable odds of the Mead Botanical Garden will be a perpetual monument to your vision, courage and self-sacrifice. For your infectious enthusiasm, your creative genius and your undimmed idealism, Rollins College confers upon you the degree of Doctor of Humanities and admits you to all its rights and privileges."
