ON May 8 the Dartmouth Club of Worcester County entertained President Dickey and Secretary Sid Hayward at one of the most successful meetings the Club has ever held. It was "Welcome Home" for over thirty of our members who have returned from the service. This group and the fathers of three of the eight Dartmouth men from Worcester County who lost their lives, were guests of the Club.
President A1 Marsters '30, of Southbridge, presided. Chaplain John Cummings '23, of Marlboro, recently returned from three years' duty in the Pacific with the Fleet, conducted a short memorial for James D. Gorrie '31, Benjamin B. Hill '32, Daniel P. McEndy '36, Ralph A. Merigold '38, Roger P. Warfield '38, William W. Vroom '40, John H. Lendo '41 and Jay C. Griffith Jr. '42.
Howard W. Cowee 'OB had prepared resolutions in connection with the deaths of Frederick A. Carroll 'OB, a former member of the Club, and Walter S. Young '01, formerly Superintendent of the Worcester schools.
Sid Hayward spoke briefly on some of the problems, both serious and humorous, faced by the College in these days of semi-coeducational operation and pressure for admission.
President Dickey's visit to Worcester was the first opportunity that many of the Dartmouth men in this area have had to meet and talk with him. His speech was delightfully humorous in spots and grimly serious in others and dealt with the problems of the liberal arts college in a changing world, especially as it applies to the diminishing time factor in world affairs. His remarks were extensively quoted, both in the news section and editorial page of the Worcester papers. It was a grand evening and one which those who attended will not soon forget.
