For the information of those who may have overlooked the notice in the June MAGAZINE of Morris Smith's promotion, they will be glad to learn that he is now a lieutenant colonel.
The Berkeley, California, Gazette of May 8 reports the death in action of Pfc. David C. Hoyt, son of classmate George and Mrs. Hoyt. David met his death in Italy on April 15 while fighting with a mountain infantry unit of the Fifth Army. A graduate of Berkeley High School and a student at the University of California for two years, David enlisted in January, 1941, and when war was declared was one of the initial members of the Army's ski troops. He trained at Mt. Rainier and at Camp Hale, Colorado, and saw his first active duty in the Aleutians campaign. Following that service, and before going to Italy, he served as instructor to mountain troops in Colorado, and during the interval between active service was married to the former Frances Moceri. David's brother, Harry, was recently discharged from the Army Air Forces.
Walter (Deke) Leighton died on May 22 following an operation performed a week earlier. Deke is survived by his wife and two daughters. Burial was at Richmond, Va. Deke had attended the New York Alumni Dinner on April 26 and appeared to be in good health. He was essentially a good citizenquiet, modest and dependable, loyal to his college and class, and devoted to his family. He started his business career with the Western Electric Company in 1908 and worked continuously with that company in an accounting capacity until his death.
Jack Hathaway is stationed at Battalion Headquarters in New York City after more than two years service in Alaska.
Art Winslow writes that he is "still carrying on in the personnel field at the Hollingsworth & Whitney Cos., paper manufacturers at Waterville, Maine." Art has now completed thirty-three years of service with his company. He has one son, Robert, who has been in the Navy since March, 1943, and is now a lieutenant (jg). Following a period of training, part of it at Dartmouth, he served in the Aleutians, then in the South Pacific, and after a period of instructing at Melville, R. I., has recently left for his third tour of overseas duty, again in the South Pacific. Robert is married, lives in Portland, Maine, and has one daughter. Art reports that few of his Dartmouth friends and classmates cross his path in Maine, but he continues to be hopeful.
