WHO'D YA SEE AT THE LAFAYETTE GAME AT HANOVER? Well, says L GOTTSCH, there with BECKIE, STUMPIE BARR, ETHEL, HELEN and PAUL MINER, CORT HORR, F. RUNYON, "PUP" COLIE, Attorney; JOE-FLO DUKE (arches coming back strong now that Time and Life find adv. pouring in without beating the pavements) and better half, MARY, AXE PROCTOR, MIKE DAVIES and MRS. The STUMPIE BARRS were gracious hosts at their Lyme Road residence to all '18ers in town. CORT HORR showed 20th Reunion movies

STUMPIE BARR NEEDS YOU-OHSO BADLY! There's about 155 '18ers enjoying this MAG—the payers take the rap if you don't—give the class a break and send in your $3.50 if you haven't done so already—one unbalanced budget is enough in this land.

18 UP-GIVE DON MACAU LEY ALIFT .... NOMINATED REPUBLI-CAN CANDIDATE FOR MAYOR OF SPRINGFIELD, MASS. at primary on October 10th (RALPH CLARK pulling strong for him) .... served in France as pilot of bombing plane .... grad Northwestern U. law school '24, Ass't City Solicitor, Springfield, '25-28, Chr. Repub. City Comm. '32, City Solicitor '34 to '38 Quote from Springfield newspaper, 10/15/35—Springfield needs young men ofability and integrity like Mr. Macauley inits law department—he has been a greathelp in the honest conduct of the city affairs.

HARVARD GAME PEERADE-thanks to EDDIE FERGUSON (attractive, single homes, Needham, Mass.) Boston wheelhorse, who had dinner after the game with STUMPIE & ETHEL BARR, CURT & GLADYS TRIPP; and loyal JAKE BINGHAM, and RUTHIE, chorister of the evening (Jake says "here are the facts, and the scandal and redhots someone else will have to send you"). Here's the lowdown on 18's Boston doings. Night-before-dinner at University Club (why not mail N. Yorkers a notice queried disappointed BILL CHRISTGAU) 23 eighteeners 11 wives .... reunion and '39 football season preview movies (thanks to 'lBs Treas. and Hanover's Asst. Treas. STUMPIE BARR and ETHEL (quote Ethel "I didn't marry him for his speaking ability") .... Orchids to GEORGE (Pres. New Rochelle School Board) DAVIS for films on 'lBs 10th, 15th and 20th reunions (may we use 'em at an 'lB N. Y. party, George?) JASPER JOHNSON (and much better-half ANN) had a Boston plant to look over so was present (also visited early season Hanover game to inspect N. H. plants—Stanford game last year to supervise California plant—in fact he'll plant a plant wherever you want to plant) HARVEY & BARBARA HOOD ('18s Alumni Council member) were missed (guess was at Jasper Johnson's California plant with GENE MARKEY and BILL MUDGETT-yes, got a telegram later signed Gene and Harvey "'18ers in Hollywood send greetings" KILLER GEORGE STODDARD and MARY were missed at Harvard and Yale (he really has a California plant but bet you a Stetson comes October he's out in the black woods at night stalking bears with a trail of ripe fish gut) .... others at Boston were CHAUNCE HOOD (building sloops and invites inquiries), my sturdy N. H. Hall roomey MARSH LEAVITT (prospective employers take note Marsh lost his teaching job at Salisbury, Conn.; school absorbed by High School; now at Babson's School for Positions and hopes to connect with statistics or cost accounting) WARREN FARMER, AL KENDALL (in good voice) T. REED MONTGOMERY (beer baron of Hanley's ale; we hear making a change) HERB MUTHER (thanks for the projector, Herb) DON & IRENE DAVIS, TOM SHIRLEY (the tough rock from Shirley Hill Farm, N. H. now a greying, dignified Boston Banker—and frequently thrown for a 10-yd. loss by leather merchant LOU COUSENS) and his so much better half PRISCILLA, country squire LOU COUSENS & HELEN—(good looking daughter, looks like Helen of course, takes in Hanover house parties and is an exceedingly popular Colby Junior girl), DOCTOR LEON WHITE AND LILLA, JOHN BANJO SULLIVAN and the MRS. (furnished the music with Curt Tripp) JIM CARPENTER 8c MRS. (she and 20th Reunion Hostess EDITH COOLEY planned the girls' end of it, Jim saw to it that triple A table service was forthcoming) Doctor CURT TRIPP & GLADYS, BRAINEY BURNHAM, beaming DOC. JOE QUINCY (3 doctors at Boston party—none at New York, how come?) lawyer ED STANLEY, AL GOTTSCHALDT & BECKIE (Al a partner of Louis Glaser, Pres. Adv. Club, Boston). To Eddie, Jake and Al congrats on such a swell party; thanks for your prompt news—and to Stumpie Barr you're aces high if you've sent him your $3.50 class dues

YALE GAME CLASS DINNER (?) well, some ate later. BILL COULSON, the October visitor-of-the-month at Hanover (presented his plan at the N. Y. Council meeting of enriching the lives of non-D fathers and others who earnestly yearn to become as much a part of that loyal Dartmouth spirit as their sons) was present, escorted by Sales Manager H. WARREN "RED" WILSON (now advanced from still life to painting nudes—also he and PEG can be seen week-ends horseback rid- ing over the Kent, Conn, hills) also Charlie Bishop '26 and Hobart 'OS. Present also were FRED CASSEBEER (collaborating with Rockwell of N. Y. Times on flower arrangements) FRANK CLAHANE, (tell 'em your story on ethics, Frank) 808 FISH, champion Alumni Fund Getter, seen at the Yale game with MILDRED and Prof. Bill's son (how he chortled to tears as did we all when distinguishedly grey GERRY GERAN told his story of hand-craft labor). The doors swung open with a blast and in blew Man-Mountain FAT STOGIE HARDY (Steel's biggest getter of business) and by the hand he led STANLEY BURTON JONES, fatigued from Asking The Man Who Owns One (Packard account) and advertising JOE FLO DUKE'S mag Time—then followed a attractive girls who seemed in able hands with Sales Mgr. "RED" WILSON and SHAMUS DAN SHEA, V. P. of Moody's Mike now goes to Stan Jones, ever willing to help out and toss in a few lines MAHONEY WINS IN THE BILTMORE!DARTMOUTH WINS IN THE BOWL!

Such were the thrilling headlines of Sunday, Nov. 5. Chronicling the main sporting events of the previous day, N. Y. papers paid tribute to the Green for its surprising win over the Bloomer Girls in New Haven, and to STEVE MAHONEY, the Silver Fox of Terpsichore, for taking the FAT HARDIE RUMBA SWEEPSTAKES without drawing a long breath. The latter event properly climaxed a day pregnant with surprises. Held in the 9-room Biltmore Arena of the Detroit Stogie, MAHONEY amazed the judges who could see at all with the fluid grace and Castilian fire of his footing.

Other contestants left the floor in shame. Hardie, who had trod the first measure, hastily retired to the sidelines when the ceiling in the room below fell, injuring six people. EDUARDO BUTTS had entered, but proved unable to rise from the couch when his number was called. FRANCISCO CLAHANE, another Celtic Cuban, had volunteered to act as Judge, but proved unable to view the contestants, let alone pass judgment. Senor Mahoney's partner (we'll explain this away at home, Steve!) was the partner of another Dartmouth gentleman who also appeared to be suffering from the prevailing lassitude, and who willingly relinquished her to the rapid-fire leadership of the Magnetic Senor. Up and down, back and forth they sped, while the odor of burning carpet was heavy in the room—or was it Mr. Hardie's cigar?

Though the Silver Fox was forced to give away a few years—say, 25 or 30—to his fair partner, he conceded nothing in agility and grace. His gnarled fingers snapped like pistol shots, his whirling feet appeared to be clad in size 7 shoes, instead of 14; key rings, change and shirt buttons spun from him like rice at a wedding. And when he collapsed, mowed down by the scythe of Father Time, rather than any puny contestant, the cheers of the multitude brought down the house, the chandelier, and the House Manager—as one. Mr. Hardie presented the winners with a pretty little speech—which few understood—and a lovely pair of fine cut crystal goblets .... filled to the brim with dancing, bubbling Scotch-and-soda. (Note: since going to press, word has just been received that Senor Mahoney is still bedded at Polyclinic Hospital, the result of efforts far too strenuous for one of his years.)

Ernie Earley's annual gathering of Senior Fathers and what the Ham-Bc-Egg gents flatteringly term "Senior Citizens," foregathered at the Murray Hill Bar for a few flagons in the interest of putting the Elis under a heavy handicap when they met the Greenies on the morrow. (Why Earley selects this undermined deadfall and tottering firetrap year after year is a question which only a Senior Insurance man can answer. Perhaps he feels most at home in a structure which so closely parallels his own mortal housing.)

Here were met many good men and true. JINGLE-SPURS JOHNSTON, far from the rodeo at the Garden .... TRAPPER MORRISON in the familiar coonskin cap CHEMIST CASSEBEER with an armful of late-blooming dahlias ....REALTOR 808 KNOWLES, too long absent.... SHAMUS SHEA, who had a blond if not a stock.... DUSTY RHODES, exhibiting five new hairs abaft his shimmering newel post head The Stogie himself, in superb voice, with a scarlet cravat like a slashed jugular, headlighted by a 5-carat chip of ice that called for sunglasses .... last and least, F. RUNYON COLIE, Old Corrosive Sublimate Himself, reducing great and small alike to pebbles and dust, respectively, with a few well-chosen words." (A most unpleasant surprise, this last encounter, to your reporter.)

Lo and behold in pops FREDIE (Int. Tel & Tel) SAMUELS, who's son Frederick won over the hearts of his neighbors by squirting the garden hose in their—not his—front door. Then there was Chase banker LEICESTER "WART" McELWAIN (saves up his vacation to date up the football season) JOHNIE THAYER the Dartmouth Club resident, and SYL "TOBEY" MOREY (Adv. Mgr. Consolidated Oil) who deserted us for an office party. Winding up the evening were DICK HOLTON (investment advisor for Brooklyn's East N. Y. Savings Bank), 808 (Rhinelander Real Estate) KNOWLES, (and it's good to see you coming out, Bob) and last but not least our own BILL CHRISTGAU who later closed up the D. club with Gerry Geran.

AT THE YALE GAME-said MRS. PHIL BOYNTON to us in front of PHIL and their son and daughter "I told him he ought to get out and come to class dinners." So now 'iBers, see what your wives are thinking. Then there was RUTH and CURT GLOVER, PETE COLWELL and MRS. (want a cozy home in Westchester? see Pete) LOUIS HUNTOON, the tycoon cap and tube man from Providence, R. 1., and HENRY OPPENHEIM and wife (ran a special last year Albany to New Haven)— EV YOUNG popped up without JAY LE FEVRE and MILDRED (whom we missed) and seated in the stands (with a sturdy son or two) was the Belgian Tulip Squire JOE FLO DUKE. After the game, rugged New Englanders, DAVE GARRATT and DICK HOLTON were seen high jumping their wives MARION and EDITH over the stadium seats After the game we had the pleasure of attending a 'l7 cocktail party in ('l7 notes) the shadow of the Bowl at Bob Scotts (thanks Spike, Bunny and Will) and there enjoyed that fine, loyal fellowship of which 'l7 can so rightfully boast. Here we learned that SWIFTIE BARNES' son was just sunk a fraternity at Hanover and despite our best efforts to jimmy some gossip out of a Mrs. O'Neill from Holyoke, Mass. about our own TED HAZEN she discreetly replied "He's a fine fellow, has a very successful business, is a steady New Englander" (all of which she clung to repeatedly even after we told of his antics in Rake and Roll)
