Letter from Jack Childs:
"Route No. 1, Libertyville, ILL."September 15, 1935.
"Dear Bob:"No, I haven't forgot you, I've just beentaking a summer snooze, but today, I'vegone on a letter writing spree and can'tstop. So I'll include one to you and giveyou what news I've got up my sleeve.
"Speaking of '09 guys, the most successful bird in these parts is the Hon. JessHawley, who's been making heavy sugarall during these haywire days. His latestmoney-maker is them fibre helmets whichhe's selling all over the world. Multiply25,000 by a profit of 5 cents and you'll geta rough idea of what the lad's netting perday. Of course, the goverment takes alotta that jack away from him, and theygot fellas out there watching him all thetime so's they get their share. Hawley's atwo-estate guy now; one in Florida andone in Geneva, 111. He's still O. K. and hasstill got a big male following—mostly bondand insurance and other guys with salesideas.
"Bull Hadden is one of them efficiencybirds out to the Hall Ptg. Co., a big outfithere in Chi, and is going along in goodshape. He's found that better'n being inbusiness for hisself. He's put on a bigstummick, which shows he's been eatingregular. I didn't know he was a basssinger until I heard him cut loose theother night, and then I still had my doubts.
"Chicago's gain was New York's loss, for Russ Pettengill has left these partsand took his talents to that burg on theHudson. I understand he's sold his country estate out in Barrington, ILL., probablymaking a pretty penny on the transaction.
' "As for Joe Graff, Jimmie Greenebaum, and Solomon, them birds seem to havecrawled into a hole some place and thenpulled the dirt in on top of 'em. At least, they've managed to keep theirselves prettywell covered.
"Nut Root has landed with Sears,Roebuck if Co., inhere he'll likely get abetter deal. Nut's a guy you like to see dowell, for he's regular.
"Frank Bartlett was managing an apartment building in the Windy City andliving with his family in an 11-room flatbecause it didn't cost him nothing. Butsince the investment business has took aspurt, he's landed as manager of the bonddepartment for S. W. Straus & Co.
"Understand that Dutch Schildmillerover in Cincinnati had some tough sledding for awhile. The last I heard, he hadlanded a good berth and was getting alongfine. Was glad to hear it, for I wouldn'twant nothing bad to happen to my oldroommate.
"Saw Reggie Bankart last year when hestopped off in Chi on his way west to bedoing some wool-buying. I told him aslong as he wasn't doing no wool-gatheringit was jake with me. I always had a softspot in my heart for Reggie, in spite ofthe fact that he was an athlete.
"Sawny Reagan is another gent who'sgoing big on the Pacific Coast. Sawny isone of the gentry who lived up to thepredictions about him in college. He'sturned out to be like one of HoratioAlger's heroes.
"Had a letter from Willie Loughlin, theWorcester legal luminary, whose moralewas a little better than the last time Iheard from him. He's beginning to thinkthat the sun ain't gone into a permanenteclipse. If I should happen to see Willietoday I'd give him a whole bag of bulland a package of cigaret papers and say:'There you are, Willie, now I'm going tobum the makings offa you.'
"Saw Art Rose (you know, our classmatewho transferred to Amherst) on the street, the other day. Stopped him and he said,'Yo face is mighty familiar, suh, but I can'tplace the name.' I told him to skip it.
"As for myself, I'm still living out in thecountry and working hi the city, my workseeming to be tending towards editorialservice. My big account, at present, iswith Nu-Enamel Corporation, where Iedit a publication called the Nu-Enamel Nus. Have a couple other sheets I get out, besides nosing around in the publicityfold. Life ain't treated me too rough. Isee a lotta the Dartmouth gang aroundChi and I'm having fun living.
"There you are, sonny boy, you askedfor it, and you got it. Understand that Iwon't be responsible for no libel suits.
"Yours for 'op halcyon days,
"JACK CHILDS."
From Craig Thorn Jr.
"In looking over Dad's class notes inthe June ALUMNI MAGAZINE I noticedseveral lines regarding Louis Wright Jr.;who wishes to contest my claim to ClassBaby for your worthy class (which class, according to Dad, was a bunch of hoodlums at that).
"I first saw the light of day on a farmon the 3d of June, 1909, a year ahead ofLouis, perhaps before he was even thoughtof.
"The position of Class Baby being oneof great sacredness and solemnity, etc., Inaturally rise to arms at the mention of anopponent. I shall always remember receiving a Wah-Hoo-Wah from the class at areunion about 20 years ago in Boston, probably preceding a Harvard fracas.
"Dad is getting along pretty well downin the Big City, and, just between you andme, is expecting a blessed event in abouttwo weeks, which is doing pretty wellfor anyone as old, decrepit, and ancientas an '09/er.
"I won't contest this honor with LouisJr. on the golf course—but can he equalone son already entered in Dartmouth anda daughter preparing for Smith?"
