Bouton, our astronomer, writes from St. Petersburg, Fla.: "I have been more activein my observatory work than usual. Mydeafness has so increased that I go out tolectures, social gatherings, etc., only a verylittle, thus having more time for work onstars and for interesting, and perhaps somewhat instructing, visitors, whom I alwayswelcome to the observatory. My sight seemsto be as keen as ever, and my general healthis good. NRA and the various allies whichnow require for designation most of thealphabet are not filling my purse as yet. Infact it has been growing more flat duringthe past six months. But we keep on smiling, and our view of country and comingconditions is optimistic."
So much from Florida, where a boom is said to be lending optimism. Turing now to our other El Dorado, Hayt writes from Lincoln, Calif.: "I have nothing to report. At present, morally 100%+; physically90%, a little neuritis at times; financiallysomewhere below par, but I have greatfaith in the promising words of our 'dearPresident' that good times for all are justaround the corner. Metaphorically I amstanding at the corner with an elm club, and when the good times fellow shows uphe gets the club. I do hope this occurs inthe near future."
Gray writes from Chicopee Falls, Mass.: "I am working every day and am absolutelyregular at my meals, always on time, andregularly approve the efforts of the cook."
Judge Addison E. Cudworth, whose death at South Londonderry, Vt., was noted in the February issue of the MAGAZINE as of the class of 1877, was a much respected member of '78 for the last term of sophomore year, but preferred to be numbered with '77.
Turning back to Florida, one again detects the optimistic atmosphere in the following from Stimson, written from Coral Gables: "Am able to be about in our'Miami Area' as necessary daytimes butseldom go out evenings, and when I havetwo or three times in the last sixteenmonths I have paid for it with a sleeplessnight following. But I get out to theweekly noon lunches of the Lions Club, teach the adult Bible class at Plymouthchurch, Coconut Grove, Sundays. Latelywas asked to join the Century Club of ourcity, but have not yet accepted; perhaps Iwill, for though its meetings are in theevening, the rendezvous is within walkingdistance of my home."
